About this listen

February, 2022. Russia invades Ukraine, the biggest attack on a European country since World War I. Matt 'Lastman' Standing and a crack SAS team are sent into the war zone. Their mission - to help the Ukrainians defend their country from the Russian invaders. But when Russian mercenaries begin committing atrocities and war crimes in occupied Ukraine, MI6 decides to change the rules of engagement.

Standing and his team are given new orders - to take out the Russian president, one of the most protected men in the world. It has all the makings of a suicide mission, but Standing is the last man to turn down a challenge.

Good story overall but lacks in the usual high credibility, realism and detail, not a normal S Leather read, Standing promised excellent adventure but at times the storyline searches for the next adventure just to make the book longer, lost its way doing this, no sub-plot and additional character storyline. Disappointing read, at times it felt tired and written as a fill-in. As a dedicated fan it failed to engage and entertain me, normally there’s a full story but this was one mission after another but in real life Standing and his troop can’t be the only team in the Regiment and he can’t be left alone to command every time, every opportunity, every time single handedly, the military and especially its SNCOs don’t ignore mental issues and nor does the service, especially its high performance echelons.

Wow! This is yet another brilliant listen from the master of the thriller genre, Stephen Leather. Well written with plenty of good characters. Edge of the seat listening from start to finish, just remember to breathe occasionally. Narration is outstanding from yet another master Mr Paul Thornley. Highly Recommended.

Another Stephen Leather masterpiece and as always brought to life by a brilliant Paul Thornley narration.

Another great Stephen Leather book.

I did like the insight into details of the Ukranian war and the story itself was okay. However, the implausibility of the British government sanctioning the main plot just made me lose interest. Some people really like the narration of PT. I think his voice is good, but his long pauses at the end of every sentence is so annoying.

implausible story
