Summary
Glasgow's citizens are in a celebratory mood for the annual West End Festival parade. But beneath the jovial surface lurks something darker. A confused young woman is found wandering among the stilt walkers and jostling crowds, claiming to have been abducted by aliens.
Before DCI Anderson and DI Costello can investigate further, a body is discovered, and it becomes horrifyingly clear that a depraved killer has taken advantage of the busiest day of the year to carry out a gruesomely macabre plan.

Gruesome, don't listen before sleep like I did 🙄
Bit too graphic this one for my liking, literally gave me a nightmare lol, also Costello's attitude stinks more then usual, glad I'm not working with her!
I also felt this was a bit judgemental and over dramatic. Not my favourite I have to say.

Completely unbelievable plot
I enjoyed the earlier Anderson and Costello books although I have felt a certain fantasy element creeping in to the previous two.in the series. "Standing Still" is the most unreal, disappointing and incredible of the books so far. The Glasgow atmosphere is extremely well conveyed but unfortunately so is a general sense of gloom and fatalism. When one loses interest in the main characters it is time to move on to another author. Even the outspoken Costello, normally a strong female character, comes across this time as merely opinionated and crass.
There were sub-plots which could have been developed further,to add some weight to the narrative, particularly the one about the care of the elderly and the illegal practices in the care home. This part of the book, too, reached the realms of fantasy with the hidden dormitory. I could not help but notice some "lazy" writing throughout the course of the novel.
The extraordinary and fantastically gruesome ending was almost predictable, as was the identitiy of the murderer.
