Summary

“So long, Carrie Bradshaw - there’s a new role model for go-getting thirty-somethings. Gabrielle Bernstein is doling out inner peace and self-love for the postmodern spiritual set.” (Elle)

Foreword by Marianne Williamson

Before she became a celebrated teacher and lecturer, Gabrielle Bernstein was going down a dangerous path. For years, Bernstein struggled with eating disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, and constant self-doubt and self-loathing. That all changed when she discovered A Course in Miracles, which taught her that much of what she feared in life was not frightening at all and, in many cases, not even real.

Now, Bernstein lives an empowered, healthy, and joyful life. In Spirit Junkie, Bernstein guides listeners through the life-changing lessons that shaped her spiritual journey: how we become accustomed to fearful ways of thinking, how to recognize and change those thought patterns to make way for bliss, and how to maintain our happiness and share it with the world. By understanding and changing our perceptions, hang-ups will melt away, resentments will release, and a childlike faith in joy will be reignited.

Praise for Spirit Junkie:

“For those ready to give up their addiction to suffering or who simply need to release the general malaise of a too-busy, too shallow way of life, Spirit Junkie is a soothing balm for the soul. Gabrielle Bernstein is a brilliant shining guide for all who seek to have more love, more light and more miracles in their life.” (Arielle Ford, author of The Soulmate Secret

Critic reviews

"In this mixture of humor, grief and how-to instructions on achieving enlightenment, Bernstein offers more than just autobiography or a user’s guide to meditation.... A groovy blend of meditative and instructive writing." ( Kirkus)

Spirit Junkie fan!

Loved this book, first book of Gabrielle's that I've read and I related to it so much. It spoke sense to me and has giving me a better insight of my ego and how it works. Look forward to reading more of her books.

Prayers are for asking, Mediation is for listening

How many times have I heard or said “Have you prayed about it?” Thanks to Gabrielle Bernstein I know understand that “Praying is for asking and mediation is for listening.” I’m not sure how a book falls into your Audible cart but Spirit Junkie fell in mine. This book truly comes into your life when it’s supposed to.

I am not sure what it is missing...

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I am not sure, but I really like Gabby and her work but this lost my attention after the first half hour. Hum...

For Younger Crowd, I guess

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Something about Garbrielle doesn't feel right for me. I just don't resonate. Do think she would have great appeal for newbie Course members or in the ages of 20-30 . Author did a good job, it just didn't strike me personally. But then, I am quite used to anything having to do with ACIM blowing my MIND and traveling incredible depths of thought, mystery and spritiual principles. I am used to ACIM being like NOTHING else. This audio fell short for me, but I had SUPER high expectations too.

Nice introudction material for a new student or a younger listener.

Spiritual Hot Chocolate

What made the experience of listening to Spirit Junkie the most enjoyable?

Gabby's personality makes hearing her read her story really endearing and touching. Her personality is unique, and so relatable. Over the past year that voice has helped me grow and adjust to some pretty difficult situations. While listening to the book I felt we were having another

What was one of the most memorable moments of Spirit Junkie?

I enjoyed hearing about her experience with John of God in more detail. Opening yourself up to what is possible, without building super-strong boundaries is key. Really touched me.

What does Gabrielle Bernstein bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The book is great, and after hearing her read I bought the book so I could go back and underline certain passages. For me, hearing her read seemed more personal. Perhaps that is because I've spoken to her one-on-one, on the phone. I like her gravel-y voice.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Spirit Junkie?

Since hearing the book, I have recognized the real power of meditation, and come to think of it as a non-negotiable in my life. I know Gabby loves her meditation, and now I'm recognizing the full value of being still with God. It's huge!

Good for younger audience

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, to younger people, but not to friends my age. I actually thought the author had a compelling story for younger people. It was well written and heartfelt. Given that I am a senior citizen, it was difficult for me to relate to the the agonies of youth and young adulthood, since they have been resolved for me for some time.

Valley Girl Meets ACIM

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Sort of. A lot of cutsie words and phrases. Definitely a chick book (no disrespect). Lots of talk about boy friends, self- esteem issues, and drug-addiction. It seemed with all the exercises at the end of each chapter that she was writing her own student manual. I did enjoy her positive attitude but I wouldn't say that this is a deep book with thought provoking reflections on A Course in Miracles.

Great for teenagers, not for adults.

While I love Gabrielle Bernstein and have read sever books of hers I find this one to be kind of hard to get through. I found it really frustrating that she relates her lessons to stories of not fitting in in high school. I found her silly high school dramas to be distracting and frustrating. As an adult, I have been through the dramas of high school and honestly most of those things level out as you get older.

I tried to keep reading because I felt like she had overcome her drug addiction, but when she talked about smoking pot and drinking alcohol in high school I found myself saying oh brother. I smoked pot in high school but wouldn’t call myself a recovering drug addict. I think this book is great for a teenager, but not for someone struggling with adult life crises.

I recommend reading one of her books, The Universe Has Your Back, and you’ve pretty much got everything Gabby has to say. It’s a great one!

An introduction to "A course in miracles"

What did you like about this audiobook?

I love the personal way Gabrielle Bernstein use the form of memoir to introduce a. New audience to a "course in miracles" her work can aid you when taking on this massive course. Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

Not my Cup of Tea

Maybe I'm not in the right mindset? I finished listening to this book but stopped reading it for awhile and then forced myself to finish it. I was unrelatable and odd to me. I also felt like the author was bossing me around in the "exercises" and not giving an acknowledgement that she had recorded it for Audible.
