About this listen

This collection of stories goes back to Dan “Spider” Shepherd’s SAS days, and the missions that shaped him. From his training in the welsh hills and the jungles of Belize, through to his early missions in Sierra Leone and the Middle East, these nine stories chart his rise through the SAS, and his involvement with the elite Sabre Squadron.

Along with his comrades Jimbo, McKay and Geordie, Spider puts his life on the line on active duty…and sows the seeds of his future career. We even discover how he earned his nickname....

The inimitable Spider Shepherd is at the very core of his training in SAS written by Stephen Leather and with an outstanding audiobook narration by British actor Paul Thornley. Listeners are taken into the depths of stifling jungles, across the freezing hills of the Welsh countryside and the foreboding plains in Africa. Hear Spider earn his trust among the leaders of the Sabre Squadron and the death-defying assignments he must endure as part of the drills. You will see another side of Spider that you’ve never seen before. Available now from Audible.

The days before joining the police and M15. A great collection of stories. Well written good stories and a great grounding to one of the best series I have ever read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book takes elements of SAS training and puts a storyline to them.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way that I felt I was there ... almost

Have you listened to any of Paul Thornley’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Lots - I am a real fan and having run out of Andy McNab books I have now found Paul narrating Stephen Leather. All equally exciting and I think Paul really plays a major part in keeping my interest.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is a bit long - I do a lot of driving and some of the stories being about 90 minutes the length of each section was ideal.

Any additional comments?

Keep up the good work Paul - I will keep listening to the books you narrate !
