About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Leo Varadkar shares his fascinating experience as Irish prime minister at a time of much change and turbulence, in this remarkably honest memoir.

Leo Varadkar was an unlikely Taoiseach – the youngest on taking office in 2017, the first Taoiseach to be gay, and the first person of colour to be Taoiseach.

Equally unlikely was his decision to bow out of politics in his mid-forties. Now, liberated from the constraints of office, he tells his fascinating story with characteristic courage and candour, and provides a unique insight into the formation and evolution of a senior politician.

In Speaking My Mind Leo Varadkar shares his pride in helping to bring about transformational changes, such as marriage equality. He describes experiences that only a prime minister could have – speaking frankly to Pope Francis on the legacy of church abuses, connecting with Barack Obama about both being the ‘tall, dark guy with the funny name’, navigating challenges such as the pandemic and the fallout from Brexit. And he writes honestly about the costs that go with the immense privilege of holding high office.

Speaking My Mind is a revealing, intimate and important memoir from a singular public figure.

A remarkable story spanning from child enthusiast, to teenage exuberance and finally to full blown mastery. Leo Varadkar is still very fresh in the memory of the Irish people but this book has me convinced his legacy will be one of enormous transformational leadership. If you are interested in politics, leadership or even personal development you will not be disappointed by this incredibly frank, honest and often surprisingly funny recount of very recent global history.

A modern political phenom

I'm not a political fan however, I do like Leo Varadkar as a person. So this book was a nice treat, I must say its actually a good listen and very interesting.

Impressed

I really enjoyed this book. It follows the big events that marked Leo’s time in office. From his earliest days as a councillor to unforgettable periods in all our lives like Covid. It’s a ringside seat for so much - government formation talks, Brexit negotiations, his impression of Trump, the toil of the NAGP leak investigation saga - so much more. He’s the first Irish leader I have seen live his life in the full glare of social media and the instantaneous online news cycle. I like that he left on his own terms, he leaves an impressive legacy by any yardstick and I wish him well. We need more bright, hardworking and dedicated politicians like Varadkar.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I think it might have been a bit boring .. I went to 1.5x times listen speed… this seems to have made it a wee bit better.
