Summary

He doesn’t need a weapon. He is the weapon.

After losing his powers in an epic battle between good and evil, former sorcerer Nate Garrett finds himself living as a humble human in Clockwork, Oregon. While the world thinks Nate is dead, his friends continue to fight against Avalon and the evil it’s intent on spreading.

Avalon’s forces turn up in Clockwork, and Nate’s frustration grows with every passing day his magic doesn’t return. He finds himself trying to stop Avalon’s plans while hiding from enemies who would destroy everything in their path to see him dead.

Avalon’s darkness begins to threaten the people Nate cares about, and an old nemesis returns; magic or no magic, he has no choice but to fight. But will Nate see his magical powers reborn before the entire town - and everyone he loves - is destroyed?

Okay premise with a good magic system.

The main body of the novel is written from a first person account which lets the whole book down in my opinion. Whilst good to understand the main characters account there is far too much of “I said, he said, she said” for my liking. I sense the male narrator also found this awkward as he tends to whisper those words when closing off a sentence.

I enjoyed the premise of the book and my only criticism here is that the author tries to introduce far too many characters for what is a relatively short book. Some great character names except for the main one. Like a superhero with the shittest name ever.

I loved the magic system and would like to have seen more of this.

On the whole a decent book most definitely worth a read and an audible credit.

pretty crap

storyline is disjointed and sketchy
narration is ok except for the bald American accent which is contrived

He returns

Thank you Mr McHugh, once again an amazing book. I’ve nothing negative to say I love both Nate and Layla ( although not as much) and I absolutely adore Remy and the rest of the “Rebellion “. Can’t wait for the next books. Roll on February.
Again a really fabulous book and I thank you for the escapism it supplies. Thank you 🙏🏻

More Nate is never a bad thing

So happy Nate is back and can’t wait for him to kick Arthur into touch and Layla having her own sections was very good.
Wasn’t sure about the dual narration but I liked it and can’t wait for book 2.

Keeps the action (and friendships) going

The parallel narration works nicely with our 2 lead heroes and their teams. I liked the ending with its promise of excitement to come.

good story with a 50% great performance

I hate the lady reading Layla's part so much it takes me out of the story. the over dramatic reading ruins it for me. "Layla walked in the room and TURNED ON THE LIGHT!"

NOT WORTH MY TIME

I love the Hellequin Chronicles, but this new writing style is not what I am looking for.
I hate the second narrator and I hate the writing style.

The Wheel of Time series succeeded with multiple narrators because the author wrote in the same voice, The Rebellion Chronicles feels like two different writers and they styles do not compliment each other. I find myself skipping chapters because I just hate the book.

Fantastic and exhilarating

This book carries on in this world created for us to laugh and cry with the characters. McHugh does an amazing job immersing his readers into this urban fantasy. I would recommend anyone whose read any of his other books to pick this up and see what happens when you piss a sorcerer off!

Warning: SPOILERS

the entire tone of the novel has completely changed into yet another Ragnorok epic, as well as a call for revolution and political activism which parallels certain political realities. This novel moves the story from small and personal to something so huge that it spans many realms and realities....and it lost the very thing that made the stories so engaging and easy to relate to. now it's just another realm-spanning war between an evil empire and a rebellion. I could relate to Nate the sorcerer, who's been broken by life just like all of us and is trying to move on from his past, but I can't relate much to this new God-Nate and I've never been able to relate to Layla (she's irritating).

Also, ever since we found out his mom was a valkyrie I knew his dad would be either Thor or Odin, so the revelation didn't come as much of a surprise. I really wanted to be surprised, I wanted his dad to be Anubis or Llew or some other god from a different pantheon. I wanted anything but yet another Norse story. I was disappointed.

Hellequin is back from the dead!

Sorcery Reborn
The Rebellion Chronicles, Book 1
By: Steve McHugh
Narrated by: Simon Mattacks, Elizabeth Knowelden
I didn't know what this book was about when I bought it. I saw Steve McHugh had a new series so I grabbed it. Then I find it is Nate back from the dead but without powers. A lot happens during that time while living in a quiet little town. In this book he finds out who his father is! Then his family!!! The end gets super awesome! Lots of action, old friends, New creatures, and surprises.
Great narration!!! Loved this! Hurry up with the next book!!! Can't hardly wait!!!

Love the original portion of the series NATE

Love the original portion of the series NATE!!!
I am not sure if I can articulate why I dont really care for Layla's portion of this book though. Just found that I couldnt wait for her portions to be done and back to Nate's story! cannot wait for the next. I do hope it wont be the end though it seems that way. Narrator for Nate is wonderful thank you.
