Summary

A bestial face appears at windows in the night.

In the big white house on the hill angels are said to appear.

A forgotten tenant in an isolated building becomes addicted to milk.

A strange goddess is worshipped by a home-invading disciple.

The least remembered gods still haunt the oldest forests.

Cannibalism occurs in high society at the end of the world.

The sainted undead follow their prophet to the Great Dead Sea.

A confused and vengeful presence occupies the home of a first-time buyer.

In ghastly harmony with the nightmarish visions of the award-winning writer's novels, these stories blend a lifelong appreciation of horror culture with the grotesque fascinations and childlike terrors that are the author's own.

Oh my goodness!

I listened to the introduction of this book and was disappointed that an American narrator was chosen to read these stories by a British author.

However, this was nothing compared to the horror when the narrator attempted a British accent in the first story. I’ve never heard anything so terrible in my life! I could bear it for about 30 seconds and then had to turn it off. Such a shame as I really like Adam Nevill, but I won’t be able to listen to this book.

Absolutely the worst narration of any audiobook

What disappointed you about Some Will Not Sleep?

The narrator was so bad he made the introduction unlistenable, then in the first story he made up the most ridiculous accents.

Would you ever listen to anything by Adam Nevill again?

not with this narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was truly bad, stupid accents & very boring.

Very Bad Choice of Narrator

I have to join in with the criticism of the narrator, he was a very bad choice for these stories. And why an American for stories that are mostly based in Britain or Europe? A shame, because Adam Nevill is a good writer of short stories,

Not scary

Would you try another book written by Adam Nevill or narrated by David Stifel?

I couldn't even finish this book, so no.

What was most disappointing about Adam Nevill’s story?

I was looking for something a little bit more engaging.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of David Stifel?

I don't know. But he read this so monotone.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I stopped listening after three or four stories.

Any additional comments?

I want to return this as soon as possible.

An American tries a British accent for 10 hours

Publisher: "Can you do an English accent?"

Narrator: "Err...sure."

Publisher: "You've got the job."

When I imagine the absurd chain of events which led to this horrendous recording, I shiver from fright. What ignorance of reality must one possess to listen to the narrator shamble his way through the book and accept it as good enough for public consumption?

There are few ways to ruin Adam Nevill's storytelling but the narrator found one. It's a crying shame that Audible don't offer credit refunds as there's no way I'll ever be able to finish this and, given how fond I am of Nevill's second collection - Hasty for the Dark, I find this quite sad.

I would not recommend this audiobook. But I will recommend Adam Nevill's books time and time again.

Short and not so sweet stories.

Short stories that sweep you away for awhile then stay with you always. Definitely recommend.

Enthralling horror

Horror full of the wonderfully weird and the weirdly wonderful. Each story offers terrifyingly unique settings, characters and horrors, and is written with such power and choice of words so as to feel alive.

A mixed bag

Started off terrible but it ended on a high. I'd recommend you skip the first few, maybe start from doll hands and read to the end.

Where Angels Come In
2 stars! It was a typical scary house story where people have been known to disappear when they go inside it and there's always that one survivor that lived to tell their tale. Been there, done that.

The Original Occupant
3 stars - I enjoyed the descriptions in this one. Felt like I was there but again a story that's been done before. Very predictable.

Mother's Milk
2 stars - very weird and disgusting. I was confused about the characters as I couldn't tell if they were human or not. Maybe that's what the author intended but the story was just weird. Unique but weird for me.

Yellow Teeth
1 STAR! Absolutely vile and disgusting. Not my kind of story. I'm sure some people would have enjoyed it but it really was not my cup of tea at all.

Pig Thing
2 stars - could have been a promising story  but towards the end it just lost direction and made no sense to me.

What God Hath Wrought?
2 stars - It was a badly done biblical apocalyptic type story. It felt like it was going in that direction but then it was like that was happening and everyone except a few were still going about their daily lives.

Doll Hands
3 stars - Creative dystopia like story. I enjoyed it and the author did the same thing like mothers milk where you couldn't tell if the characters were human or not and it worked here, got me thinking about the story even after I finished it. The ending was chilling too.

To Forget and Be Forgotten
2 stars - Like the title. Its a story that does not stay in your mind even after you've read it. Bland and boring. A voluntarily recluse individual goes to work at a place with weirdos.

The Ancestors
5 STARS! -  My favorite in the whole book. Its like the grudge/the ring meets toy story! Looool. Super fun and exciting the whole way through.

The Age of Entitlement
3 stars - More of a thriller. Was a good story and could be a good stand alone one if done right.

Florrie
3 stars! - It was a bit weird, the main character moved into an old house that had the furniture of the old occupants and the effect it had on the new character. it started off well but then went on a tangent.

Brilliant Collection

Some Will Not Sleep was Adam Nevill's collection of short stories that I listened to, and it's a brilliant, gripping, well written and very eerie collection of horror stories, many of which mix into new weird. Brilliantly written, - I've noticed some complain about the narrator - in all honesty his voice grew on me. I've listened to this collection and other two - Hasty For the Dark and Wyrd and Other Derelictions quite a few times and will do so many more
