Courage, bravery and humility

An incredible, balanced, authentic view into the life of a German soldier who, like most, initially believed he was fighting for the dignity of their country.

Why isn't this a movie?

Well layed out and very well written story.
The narrator can seem a bit monotone but that doesn't detract from the quality of this book...

Unrepentant Nazi

"We weren't Nazi soldiers we were German soldiers"
Takes the usual line of claiming to not know of Nazi atrocities despite his high rank. Blamed France for outbreak of WW2. In denial.

Great insight for anyone interested in WW2

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you're interested in WW2 this is a great book for giving an insight into what it was really like to experience the war as a German soldier. For example I was really surprised to hear how so much was carrying on almost as normal even in the last months of the war.

What does John Wray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

At first I was put off by such a strong American accent narrating the life of a German soldier, but you get used to it very quickly and I found the narration fitted quite well with the story, it doesn't gush with emotion but that seemed right.

Any additional comments?

Other reviews touch on how the story isn't in strict chronological order, it starts with the battle of Berlin and then jumps back in time. I thought this would be annoying but it isn't so don't worry about that.

Fantastic 🥳

A must for every history buff, this is one of the best audio books I’ve ever listened to. Very well read it is too, exactly what you would imagine a young career soldier to sound like 👍

An honest read

A very open account covering a wide period of time. The author has done his best to put the reader in his time and experience with out trying to portray anything except the truth.

Powerful stuff

A roller-coaster ride. Devoid of pomp, flower, or self pity.. I'll read it again.
