Summer, 1993, and university student Alex Lane finds himself at the end of the summer term, broke and without plans. When offered the chance to join students – including beautiful, mercurial Ella – clearing out Solace House, a Victorian residence left by reclusive hoarder Edwin Flayne, he accepts. Initially the house seems ordinary, if slightly mad. But sorting through junk, they discover Flayne’s journals detailing his obsession with his missing mother, his discovery of strange place Bewise, and his belief in another parallel realm, with coded instructions for reaching it. One of the students becomes increasingly obsessed with the house’s secrets and gaining forbidden knowledge – assuming they’re willing to sacrifice everything and everyone.©2026 Will Maclean (P)2026 Atlantic Books & W. Really well-narrated. The book was exactly as described: a kind of slowly unfolding horror, combined with Donna Tartt’s The Secret History.
It was a little too slow for me in parts and also I wasn’t sure the jeopardy was there enough for me but it’s an easy listen and there are really clever bits. I think the mushrooms lessened the impact somewhat (for me personally)

Exactly as described

The writing is absolutely incredible. The descriptions are rich and eccentric, for both the benign and surreal elements of the story. The characters are complex, each one with a unique voice that expands the story's perspectives beautifully. I absolutely recommend this for anyone interested in the existential, occult, and unusual.

A perfect concoction of existential dread

The performance is excellent, and the writing style is often great. The idea is fascinating, but the execution felt a little too overblown and bloated for me, and then ending didn’t quite pull off everything the book promised for a really long time, which was disappointing. However, will read McClean again, his ideas are always original and interesting.

Almost brilliant

It's a measure of a good book that you know someday you'll read it again.

I finished Solace House and immediately started back into the pivotal chapters to go through them again.

Part mystery, part literary, part horror, part fantasy - a really impressive weaving brought together to create a wonderful book.

Beautifully paced, skillful story telling.

I really enjoyed this novel. It had me intrigued and engaged from start to end. Complete escapism.

Intelligent & Spellbinding
