Summary

“We'll protect him.”

“I don’t want to be the poster boy.”

Hockey player Kevin Shaw, fresh out of university, just signed onto a Toronto team for a year. He knows he isn't innately gifted, but he works damn hard to make up for it. The last thing he needs during his first season of pro hockey is a distraction...but he can't say no when he's asked to train with a sexy friend of a friend. He wants to get better, grab a spot on the third or fourth line, and not let slip any hint of attraction to his new buddy.

“If they see, they see.”

Called up from the minor league to the major league at the end of last season, hockey player Matty O'Brien is secretly terrified he won't hack it. He's quick on his feet on the ice, and he loves living with his buddies and his dog after practice ends. One thing's missing: a relationship. He plays center forward, but he's always the wingman and never the center of attention. The way Kevin watches him makes him feel like the star player.

“He's just jealous of what you and I have.”

A spontaneous kiss sends them both scurrying for shelter, deciding whether they have room in their life for more than friendship. Just as they start to get comfortable, before they can decide what they are, someone finds out their secret. Locker room gossip is annoying for Matty but fatal for Kevin's career if the guys on the team don't shut it down.

Will Kevin gain the maturity and strength to stand up for himself without plunging deep into the closet or risking his career all over again? And can they trust their friends to hold their secrets close?

My first E. Davies sports romance

I am not a huge fan of sports and sports romances, but I really enjoyed this one by E. Davies. The hockey was not overpowering but there was enough to give the listener the feel of the team and locker room spirit and why these guys might not feel comfortable being completely out and open about their relationship. They make and incredibly sweet and hot couple and Michael Dean brings all those emotions to life perfectly.

Loved this sporty addition to the series

I've been loving the Riley Brothers series, and this sports-themed romance was another hit! Despite how heavily dominated this story was by practices, training, and all things athletic, Kevin and Matty's growing relationship was undoubtedly in the spotlight from start to finish. I loved the concept of a rookie/veteran player romance and thought it was nicely executed in this story. I'll admit that I was a bit baffled about the way these guys casually kept kissing in public but claiming they wanted to stay closeted, but it was pretty cute to think that they just couldn't resist each other. While the romance in this story had a fully fleshed out and satisfying plotline, I do wish there had been a little more closure on the hockey side of things. This story leaves off before either of their seasons has started, and I was disappointed that I didn't get the chance to see how Kevin and Matty made their relationship work while balancing a full atheletic play schedule. Even without getting those answers, this was still a great story with two really awesome main characters. Michael Dean has been an excellent narrator for this entire series, and this book was no exception! **I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Redoing this series on Audible

Redoing this series on Audible This is a story of Kevin and Matty. Both hockey players in a league where no one's out yet. Kevin doesn't want to be the gay poster boys. But then Matty joins the team. There's a lot of hidden glances, is he or isn't he. Oh and some sex. What more do we need in a book, yes a HEA. The whole Riley brothers series are hot. Great narration from Michael Dean, love that these books are written as points of view. . Slam The Riley Brothers, Volume 5 By: E. Kevin and Matty

Kevin has just been signed to the Toronto team, he is asked to team up with Matty to train pre season. Sparks fly and it looks like Kevin's roommate is going to put them in the spotlight. Loved it

Slow burn without a resolution

This is the 5th book in the Riley Brothers series which originally centered on brothers Cameron, Jackson and Thomas Riley. Starting with Book 4, the series branched off into friends of the Riley Brothers, so the connection to the core family diminishes with each book. This book almost felt like a standalone to me, so if you are reading for the Riley Brothers, don’t expect too much tie in. This book focuses on Kevin, Cam’s former hockey teammate, and hockey player Matty O’Brien. I love sports romances so this story definitely checked that box, and I really liked both Kevin and Matty; they had a lot of potential as a couple. I say “potential” because this is a definite slow-burn that never really materializes into anything in a satisfying way. The slow burn takes almost the entire book and when they finally get together, the book ends. I sincerely hope that this story is continued into the next book in the series because the structure of this one, frankly, annoyed me. Michael Dean does a great job of narration - he always does - but even his skill can’t make up for the underlying story itself. To his credit, he creates distinct voices for the characters and delivers the emotion behind the words. For me, he was the best part of this book, so if you are going to partake in this story, definitely do it with the audiobook.

great book!

I think this is my favorite book in the series. I love sports romance books and this was just wonderful. I also loved catching up with the rest of the guys and I'm looking forward to next book. And I really love the narrator, he's bringing those characters to life, he's amazing!

Need more

H I need so much more of these two, I loved their characters and really felt for them with their issues and resolutions. The story didn’t seem to resolve completely and I wonder if they will revisit this in the next book. Can’t wait for more. I must admit that I do love the narrator he’s given them so much extra personality.

My favorite couple!

I loved Kevin and Matty and was sure this would be my favorite book yet, but then it ended with nothing resolved and I wanted to cry. The only decision to come out of the entire story was to try for a relationship. With all of the build up towards friends supporting them, having their backs, etc, I thought there would be a resolution. No matter what, this was my favorite, most fun couple!

A sweet contemporary sports romance!

This was a sweet contemporary opposites attract, sports romance! Kevin and Matty were super sweet together and I loved seeing their relationship slowly evolve. A feel good, cosy, fluffy listen overall. Michael Dean's narration was amazing as always!

Kevin and Matty are a total win

Kevin is off to Toronto and he meets Matty. Boy do the sparks fly with these two. Neither want to be the poster boy for the NHL but neither of them can deny the attraction nor the pull to the other. E. Davies certainly has another winner on his hands with this one and I really enjoy the cameo's from the past books. Michael Pauley once again lends his voice and elevates the story like no one else can. This is certainly a book that needs to be picked up and read and re-read.

Work, Love or Both

Kevin is just out of university and has a year to prove himself. To help him grab the spot he is working hard for, he starts training with Matty. Matty, called up from minor league, is scared they will send him back. After a surprise kiss, they decide they want more than just friendship, but will the gossip make them chose work or love, or is there a way for them to have both? This is another book that fits the E.Davies style: amazingly written, characters you fall in love with and a lot of heat! The performance is another one that is done so well, that you feel like the characters are there with you (and wish they were). I can't wait for more!

Michael Pauley's voice is like liquid gold!

Athletes: check Hockey players: double check Both MC's are hockey players: triple check Riley Brothers series: oh yeah. I have loved this whole series, and I am so glad there is another one, especially one that is focused on my favorite sport/sub-genre: hockey. Kevin and Matty are both trying to play hockey in the big leagues, and that doesn't really allow for a relationship, let alone a truly out one. They form a friendship before considering attraction which made their chemistry even stronger. All of Matty's friends were awesome, and the drama that did occur wasn't overdone or too angst worthy. This is more of an HFN because the story ended before everything was figured out, but I am hopeful that I will see their how their HEA is working for them when we get the next book (which I am THRILLED to know there is another coming). The story takes place in Toronto, so we don't get a lot of interaction from the characters from the first 4 books, but they do make an appearance which made me happy. This story could be read as a standalone, but the other 4 were so wonderful that they should be read anyway. :-) Michael Pauley has a voice like liquid gold. He did these characters so well, and I loved them in this version even more than on paper. Highly recommend the audio version of this series! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

On my heart rink

I was never a big sports fan but I do love reading romance stories about men who play sports. And although I don’t know how to play hockey, hockey romance has always been one of my very favorite tropes. Kevin is new at Toronto team. He’s fresh out of the college, green with no experience but he worked very hard to achieve where he’s at now. Being a professional player means no dating out in the open and it becomes even more difficult when you are gay. But then he met Matty, another player on the team who’s very hot, sexy and just irresistible. Both are professional hockey players but their attraction is also undeniable. Work or love? It’s mellow, fun, heartwarming and sweet. Kevin has insecurities but Matty also has to prove himself that he could do it. There were ups and downs in this relationship but ultimately they did it. It’s always very gratifying to read HEAs by E. Davies. They are the sweetest! 4 On my heart rink stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Audio rating Story - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Narration - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Performance - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall - 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Matty and Kevin's Hockey Romance

'Slam', a low-angst, slow-burn hockey romance and 5th installment of the 'Riley Brother' series, features pro-hockey players Matty and Kevin. Matty is called up to the Toronto major-league team after number-one pick Cameron Riley has his career derailed by a medical condition. Kevin, Cam's hockey buddy from hometown Fredericton, New Brunswick, is now playing for the Toronto minor-league team with dreams of advancing to the majors. Love can complicate their goals. Will they be able to have it all? Both Kevin and Matty hesitate to act on their attraction for one another. External forces in the hockey world could end the relationship before it starts. They are both concerned about what might happen to their careers if it becomes known publicly that they're gay. What follows is a well-told story of the obstacles one faces as a gay person seeking a career in sport, and how to work love into that equation. If you love your hockey romances hot and sweet, this book by E Davies delivers. Michael Dean's performance is the definition of excellent narration. In 'Slam', his voice-acting is a perfect addition to the story. This is my voluntary opinion of the 'Slam' audiobook, that I received free and at my request. Recommended.
