I loved this book. It manages to be both a crime mystery and a quietly devastating portrait of grief. There were moments when I was close to tears. And yet the emotions are bound tightly to the plot, and the further in you go, the more uncomfortable events and perceptions become. This effect is helped by a clever, rather than gimmicky, use of its narrative structure. It totally avoids cliche and the writing at times is startlingly beautiful. I struggled with Juanita Mahon's voices of the characters other than the narration, but that's a minor point. The more I have thought about it now I have finished, the richer it has become. It seems a diservice to classify it as `crime' as the quality of writing takes it beyond genre.

Disquieting and heartbreaking

Was a bit off put at first by the idea of this being written as a letter and the narrator and nearly gave up but didn't and I'm glad I didn't.

The story kept me guessing and changing my mind all the way to the conclusion.

Just wish they'd picked a younger narrator, she's only supposed to be about 26/27 but the narrator sounded much older (I believe she's actually in her 60s) and I had to speed up the narration as she spoke so slowly.

So glad I persevered

Excellent book, loved the authors style, have already bought the next book she wrote. The narrator was excellent and it was an interesting look at relationship between two sisters and at the same time a thriller with a different twist. Only thing for me was the end was disappointing and left me kinda sat in the car, just saying... Okay! However despite this still worth a read and a very healthy 4 stars! X

Really glad I read this, end just disappointing

Not sure if I was really engaged throughout but I definitely wanted to know what was happening. Worth a listen.
