Set in the middle of the 14th century, Sir Nigel is a swashbuckling story of the eponymous hero as he seeks his fortune and the hand of his lady-love in England and France in the early part of the Hundred Years War.
It is full of high romance and chivalry, battles and brutality, humour and sheer rumbustiousness as the impoverished Nigel Loring and his lascivious attendant Aylward seek their fortunes. Edward III, the Black Prince, Sir John Chandos - one of the original Knights of the Garter - all make their appearances in one of the favourite books from the creator of Sherlock Holmes.

Sir Nigel is a good, entertaining adventure full of quests, battles, honour and chivalry. Conan Doyle’s version of medieval life is clearly highly idealised — I suspect the reality was considerably darker, grittier and less gentlemanly than the world he portrays, and at times it feels as though he’s harking back to an imagined “better” age of honour and adventure.
But taken for what it is, it’s a really enjoyable story. The adventures kept me interested, it doesn’t outstay its welcome, and it builds to a satisfying ending. I listened on Audible and thought the narrator did a particularly good job of bringing the characters and medieval world to life.
It didn’t absolutely blow my socks off, either as a novel or a performance, but it was a very solid and enjoyable listen. I’d happily recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical adventure, and I’ll be moving on to The White Company next.
4/5 — good fun, well narrated, and worth a listen.
