Editor reviews

Kruger National Park in north-western South Africa is the beautiful and explosive setting for Silent Predator, Tony Park’s thriller of kidnapping and exotic adventure. Australian actor Mark Davis provides the swarthy voice that carries the listener through the big game park all the way to the dangerous waters of Mozambique. Park, who in real life maintains a tent with his wife in the Kruger, knows his territory well.

The story focuses on Detective Sergeant Tom Furey and his high-stakes search for a kidnapped government official. He is joined in the hunt by Sannie van Rensburg, a sexy and driven inspector who is drawn to Furey with a fury. Together, Sanni and Tom must fight predators from the human to the reptilian and more.

Summary

Here's the first of best-selling author Tony Park's gripping thrillers to be published in audio by Bolinda.

In a luxury private safari lodge in Kruger National Park, Detective Sergeant Tom Furey has just woken to a protection officer's worst nightmare. The VIP in his charge, British government minister, Robert Greeves, has been abducted.

Knowing his career is on the line, Furey vows not to stop searching until Greeves is found - dead or alive. He and his South African counterpart, Inspector Sannie van Rensburg, go against official orders and start the hunt for the kidnappers through the outer limits of the national park, to the coastal waters of Mozambique. Increasingly drawn to Tom, Sannie can't resist involving herself in his dangerous mission, even risking her job to help him.

Did I enjoy?

The descriptions of Africa were good. The plot at times was a bit predictable but on the whole moved at s good pace. It's a shame that the author felt the need to add the token "descriptive" sex scene, spooling what until then had been a well described growing relationship. Would I read another book by this author? Not sure yet.

Cracking!

What did you like most about Silent Predator?

The representation of life in this part of the world was so accurate and the pace of the book really fast.

What other book might you compare Silent Predator to, and why?

Any Wilbur Smith book. Wilbur Smith has lived in Africa all his life and knows the African bush and it's people through this lifelong association, whereas Tony Park is a relative newcomer who has taken time to thoroughly research every aspect of his subject and turned it into a really good novel.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

There wasn't one that I could pick out.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really.

Any additional comments?

The story held me from the first page. The narrator was very good for the most part but his pronunciation of some of the Afrikaans words could have been a bit better researched. However, it was still well read and the difficulty with the pronunciations did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book.

Great story

Great story and worth a listen but narrators foreign accents and pronunciations of local words were poor and distracting

Not bad but the narrator.........

The story was okay but the narrator was very poor. In all sincerity I think I could have done as well.

Formula writing and not a very good formula

What disappointed you about Silent Predator?

So predictable.
Wooden writing and wooden typecast characters.

Has Silent Predator put you off other books in this genre?

Yes.
Don't read them very often but thought I would have a change.
It will be a long time before i try again - surely they cannot all be as bad as this one!

What didn’t you like about Mark Davis’s performance?

Unconvincing. Maybe the writing, maybe the performance.
Wide range of "voices" some good some bad. I did find the very masculine voice of the heroine confusing at times.

What character would you cut from Silent Predator?

Hard to say. Reverse the question: what character would you keep? Er, none.

Any additional comments?

Think that I have said as much as the book is worth.
Perhaps that I was amazed by the poor quality of the writing.
