About this listen

A touch so intimate, a kiss so deep…

Egon Wolf is on a hockey scholarship but failing at everything else. Knowing he's going to lose his ride if he doesn't get his academic act together, he seeks out a tutor.

Rakesh Aahnu is a dual major and dangerous when bored. What he enjoys more than anything is the challenge of making straight men fall for him before walking away. Just because he can.

Both Egon and Rakesh are about to discover that life has a way of throwing you in the sin bin when you least expect it.

And when faced with an unfamiliar play? All you can do is shiver.

Shiver is an LGBT+ story intended for mature listeners.

Not gonna lie, I picked this book based on the cover. I had it on my audible wish list for a long time and decided to give it a chance today while browsing for my next read... I do not regret this decision.

This book was a quick, hot read. The story between Rake and Egon is so cute... I can't.

Egon is not your typical jock. He is sweet and shy, and he loves hockey, but not to the point that he wants to make it his entire life. He struggles with school, and that makes him borderline hysterical until our not so sweet TA, Rakesh enters his life.

Their story starts simple... Egon needs a tutor. The bored genius TA needs a new challenge. What can go wrong? Well... a lot of things.

Rake accepts this challenge because, as I already mentioned, he needs a new challenge... his MO is making straight men realize they like d!*k, and then he dumps them... oh, well, this is until he meets our sweet Egon that flips his world upside down.

Rake doesn't understand what h!t him and this is hilarious to watch. Karma really is a B.

They have their fun, they're all over each other, until they're not anymore... don't worry, that part will not last long.

Their relationship progresses fast, and some might think it's unrealistic, but it works for them. I think this is what I loved the most about this story, how aware they were that this works for them. It doesn't need to be something the people around them approve of. If they are happy, that's all that matters.

Don't feel bad that the groveling is not there when you expect it, Rake will make up for it every day from that moment on, and it's so nice to see how someone realizes that they need to do better.

It was a sweet love story, and I felt giddy the whole time. 5⭐️

I highly recommend it if you're looking for a book/audiobook that's fun, hot, and fast-paced.

The audiobook is so good. The narrators did an amazing job.

Audiobook - two really good narrators, one of whom was new to me. They fit together well, with a similar speed, which is a relief.
Story - a wonderfully complicated Rakesh who struggles with boredom when being with others, so when he finds himself staying interested in Egon, he has no idea how to cope. Egon is very sweet, struggling with academics, and always afraid of failure. Their chemistry was amazing, although I personally would have preferred a few less detailed intimate scenes. There was a very emotionally fraught breakup and a lovely HEA.

very enjoyable

I want to preface this review by saying that I absolutely have no problem with straight women writing or reading sexual mlm literature. Unfortunately this reads like it didn't cater gay men in mind much at all, and felt more like somewhat of a fetish fantasy that was unrealistic.

The writing itself is good, and there are positive points to make:

I enjoyed the premise and setting, and the personalities of the characters. They had numerous moments that felt sweet and emphasised their chemistry.
The emotional moments were written well, albeit felt a bit over the top in terms of realism for how long the two had been seeing each other
I adored the consent. It was very heart warming that Rakesh frequently checked in with Egon and reminded him they could stop.

Unfortunately, this was outweighed by the bad:

Cis gay men cannot constantly fuck like this and go from one erection to another. It made me not be able to take it very seriously, and felt odd to me to portray them this way. Similar was how much the fingering escalated during the first penetration scene.
The pacing felt very strange. It's okay to have a fast burn novel, but some timeskips would have helped. I found it strange for Rakesh to one minute have issues with vulnerability and the next it's completely gone. Even just a couple of scenes would have gone a long way, maybe with more reassurance that he's safe to be vulnerable with Egon. (It's perfectly fine to make him a Dom top, but Doms need comforting too!)
The women are treated poorly. It felt like they were only there as a means to flirt with the queer men and referred to with derogatory terms, which felt unreasonable even given the circumstances.
Not much respect for other elements of the queer community, and honestly to gay men. For instance, no mention of bisexuality and framing being gay around ‘liking dick’ and the acts themselves, with Egon wanting to be ‘more gay’ by doing them.

The writing itself was fine, I just wish that the writer would think more about how to write realistic gay men and be more involved in the community as a whole.

Didn't feel comfortable to me as a gay man

I loved the characters and their story. I felt they were different to the usual ones we read but slightly perplexed when they got together with two hours left of the book. While it’s great to have that much sweet HEA, I think I needed some more angst to happen. The epilogue was like icing on cake though!

Hot story

This was tame story. Low angst, some obsession till you unintentionally hurt yourself in a process.
I've kinda enjoyed that Rakesh traumatized himself since he was always on good side of being gay and hurt a lot people in a process. Everything felt like karma got to him eventually.

Heartwarming
