About this listen

What happens when free speech isn’t cancelled by governments, but by hashtags, algorithms, and tutting strangers on Twitter?

Shhh! You’re Offended: The Death (and Afterlife) of Free Speech is a brilliantly funny and biting satire of outrage culture, cancel mobs, and the absurd lengths we now go to just to avoid offending anyone.

British satirist Arthur Rantwell takes listeners on a laugh-out-loud journey through the minefield of modern conversation, where every opinion is a potential scandal and every apology is a performance worthy of the West End.

Inside you’ll discover:

  • Why social media outrage is Britain’s true national sport.
  • How cancel culture follows a strict three-act play: Accusation, Apology, Redemption Tour.
  • The rise of safe spaces, therapy otters, and beanbags as tools of survival.
  • Why algorithms ban trifle photos but allow conspiracy theories.
  • The absurd hacks people invent to avoid cancellation — parrots, emojis, and interpretive dance included.
  • A glimpse into the future, where Parliament communicates entirely in jazz hands and comedians win BAFTAs for saying absolutely nothing.

Packed with parody case studies, tongue-in-cheek “survival tips,” and enough British wit to power the National Grid, this book is both a satire and a survival guide for anyone bewildered by the modern rules of speech.

Warning: May cause laughter, eye-rolling, or spontaneous tutting. Proceed at your own risk.

I really enjoyed Rantwell's take on cancel culture and how social media changed the way we talk. The humor and narration were great and I appreciated the algorithm examples and the absurd ways people try to avoid getting canceled. A recommended listen!

Tired of woke books and movies this audiobook is a breath of fresh air, helping to understand the cancellation culture that is emerging in every corner of social networks, sadly, the main place for communication today. Chapter 7, about how algorithms are canceling out thoughts, is a masterpiece and I recommend paying close attention to it.

I learned a lot from the short hour and a half this book lasts, but it doesn’t need more to give a clear glimpse of the different techniques modern society and progressives use to influence your thinking and subtly mold you, along with strategies to counterattack so no one can silence our voices.

I can’t give it 6 stars, or I would.

You’re Offended skewers modern outrage culture with classic British humor. Arthur blends satire and insight to explore how free speech has evolved—or devolved—into a performance of constant caution. Jacques Smith’s narration delivers every punchline and pause perfectly, making this both hilarious and thought-provoking. A must-listen for anyone who feels the world has forgotten how to laugh at itself.
