On Coronation night the ex-pat community in Hong Kong gathers for a celebration party, and twenty-one-year-old Joy falls in love at first sight. She is engaged within 24 hours, but will not see her fiance again for a year. Fifteen years later, when Sabine, her mother and grandmother are brought together, not only a deeply buried family secret is discovered, but also some fundamental truths: about the conflict between love and duty, about women's choices, and about mothers and daughters. This is JoJo Moyes' earliest novel and does suffer in comparison with her later works. The story is a fairly standard family drama based around upper middle class colonial types living a life of decaying gentility in rural Ireland and nursing a few bitter secrets. I must admit I didn't really warm to the fox hunting horsey theme and was slightly aghast that a North London vegetarian teenager could change her principles quite so easily. Her mother is irritatingly daffy and the grandmother is very hard to love, but despite this the story is reasonably interesting and I stuck with it to the end. The narrator was good but I did get a bit weary of the plummy accents. If you haven't read a JoJo Moyes book before, I recommend you don't start with this one.

Nicely written, well researched, but can only manage this sort of book once in a while, and even then I question why I did. Confess it did make me teary somewhere in the beginning chapters, I liked that, but the rest...I would probably have loved it when I was a teenager. Narrator is very good at accents, can’t fault her at all, although perhaps her cool tones are a bit squeaky clean for me. I had to see why the author is a best selling writer, I still don’t know really, there’s a lot of stuff like this out there, but if this book makes people happy, then...(shrug) it’s ok I guess.
