Excellent romantic suspense with unexpected twists

This is an excellent romantic suspense, with a romance that is surprisingly strong even though the couple never actually act upon their feelings for much of the book.

The h is newly divorced from her abusive husband, and is struggling to cope with manipulative harassment from her ex, who has visitation rights with their children, and is becoming increasingly aggressive.

The H was a former South American, street wise, slum dwelling street kid, who was given a home, protection and criminal employment by the head of prominent Argentinean crime family. He later marries the boss’s daughter who is also an active member of the family organisation. His own daughter’s birth 14 years ago resulted in something of an epiphany regarding his violent way of life, and when his wife and her family were slaughtered by a rival gang, he “disappeared” with his daughter to start a new, honest, life in the US. He now lives as a typical single dad coping with a young teenager, albeit in a high security, heavily armed house, with emergency escape procedures always prepared. To avoid detection he and his daughter have moved constantly from city to city, but his daughter is anxious to put down roots, make friends and stay in one location.

The H and h are mutually attracted but both determined not to act upon this because of their respective personal situations. When the H’s violent past finally catches up with him, (something he was always prepared for) he initially mistakes the clues as the actions of h’s violent ex-husband. Meanwhile the h’s attempts to get her life on track are disrupted by her violent ex who is getting more and more unpredictable.

This book is actually part of a series, and some characters from the earlier book feature, however it can easily be read as a stand alone. My only mild criticism is that it suffers from that typical romantic-suspense error of sex scenes at inappropriate times: The H and h finally get together a few hours after her violent ex tried to murder her. However I do have to admit it was well written and her emotional state at the time was dealt with as part of the scenario.

The ending of this book was brilliant. It tied up all the loose ends but contained several very unexpected twists that I did not see coming. A great read, highly recommended.
