Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Kathleen E. Woodiwiss comes one of her most iconic and beloved romances of all time....

A pact is sealed in secret behind the foreboding walls of Newgate Prison. In return for one night of unparalleled pleasure, a dashing condemned criminal consents to wed a beautiful heiress, thereby rescuing her from an impending and abhorred arranged union.

But in the fading echoes of hollow wedding vows, a solemn promise is broken, as a sensuous free spirit takes flight to a lush Caribbean paradise, abandoning the stranger she married to face the gallows unfulfilled.

Ruark Beauchamp’s destiny is now eternally intertwined with that of the tempestuous, intoxicating Shanna. He will be free...and he will find her. For no iron ever forged can imprison his resolute passion. And no hangman’s noose will keep Ruark from the bride—and ecstasy—that he craves.

Loved it.

I have a tatty much read copy from late 70s and thought the narrators did a wonderful job of bringing it to life.

A wonderful ending.....

Now I must be honest. From my memory of reading this book AGES ago, I was surprised as to how much I had forgotten. The name of the FMC and that of the MMC I remembered and how they 'met' and some of what happened after. What I HAD forgotten was my utter frustration with Shanna! Grrrrr!! However once the tide had turned, the book once again blossomed into a fabulous intriguing tale with a wondrous end.
After reading the 1* review mainly attributed to the Narration. I have to disagree, she did a fantastic job. The only voice which I thought didn't suit was Ruarks. Once I got over that..... it was really good.

Not a good audio

after 2 years of pre-order waiting I was so disappointed i returned it unfinished.

the Narrater was not good. the honey smooth voice of Shanna sounded like a sick witch and the colonial Ruark sounded less than the smooth and handsome character I loved as a youth.

i guess after 35 years of reading it in my head, someone elses interpretation was just not worthy of the memory. a shame as reading has become so difficult it may take me a lot longer than 20 hours to read it again.

i would certainly recommend listening to the sample before purchase.
