Summary

Listening to Shaking a Leg is like spending time with the funniest, wisest friend you've ever had - a person whose breadth of interest ranges from food to feminism to science fiction and everything in between; a person with an entirely unpredictable train of thought but whose exuberance, knowledge and insight sweeps you along.

Bursting with ideas, culturally astute and sparklingly witty, this comprehensive volume of Angela Carter's journalism is the most down-to-earth and entertaining companion to latter 20th-century thought you'll ever need.

Chapter headings?!

The audiobook has 146 chapters, each one being a separate essay.

It is incredibly unhelpful that audible has included no chapter headings.

My First Carter experience

This was the first Angela Carter experience, and I feel that it was the best thing I have ever heard! It was uproariously funny, especially the essay entitled “Lorenzo the Closet Queen” - a study of DH Lawrence’s novel “Women in Love”. I loved this book, and it felt like it was sitting down to tea with a friend and discussing these things and I am just listening and enthralled by it all. Opinions I agree with, and opinions I don’t. But I appreciated them all. Antonia Beamish gives a wonderful performance for these essays and reviews and articles. I find myself have a surge of love for Angela Carter as I am glad I came to her at such a time: she’s hysterically funny, bitchy, sardonic, rude, but never a trace of malice, or if there was I never felt it. She’s a wonderful writer with such a command of her language and her style; beautifully written and absorbing, even if she was self-admittedly notoriously foul-mouthed, it only added to the humanness of her prose and it’s elegant conversational tone. I will be getting more Angela Carter to listen to and read in future! 10/10 for it!
