About this listen

"[A]n exotic and detailed world, peopled by characters that I'd love to be friends with . . . and some I'd never want to cross paths with" - Robin Hobb on Pantomime

"Pantomime is a fantastical, richly drawn, poignant take on a classic coming-of-age story . . . a vibrant tale told with surety and grace" - Leigh Bardugo on Pantomime

In the second installment of the Micah Grey Trilogy from the award-winning, USA Today-bestselling author of Dragonfall, Micah must learn two types of magic-one for the stage, and one with deadlier consequences-while navigating a tender new love

Old magics are waking. Will the world survive their return?

Micah Grey almost died when he fled the circus with Drystan. Now he and the ex-clown must use glamours to disguise themselves and hide in the once-grand Kymri Theatre, run by a once-renowed magician, Jasper Maske. Drystan thinks Maske's 'magic' is all smoke and mirrors, but where's the line between trickery and real power?

Micah and Drystan will soon learn the answer, when Maske's arch-nemesis challenges him-and by extension, Micah and Drystan-to a duel. A duel that will seal all of their fates.

Meanwhile, an investigator is hunting the person Micah once seemed to be: a noble family's runaway daughter. As the duel draws near, Micah increasingly suffers from dark visions. Events that broke the ancient world are being replayed. Can Micah's latent powers break this deadly pattern?©2025 Laura Lam

Poor Micah and Drystan have fled the circus and go to live in a spooky run-down theatre with a faded magician. Along with tarot reader Cyan, they train in a magic act to try and beat a rival old magician in a magical version of battle of the bands. Along the way, we’ve got freaky prophecies, secretive ghosties, crooked investigators, stalky doctors, and a sweet little romance.

I’m so obsessed with the world L R Lam has created here. It’s victoriana meets steampunk meets caraval and the magic is so unique and cool I just love it.

Also, not to be dramatic, but I would die for Micah Grey.

Ugh this world is so beautiful I want to book a one way ticket 😭
