Now more than ever, we need to listen to those around us. New York Times contributor Kate Murphy draws on countless conversations she has had with everyone from priests to CIA interrogators, focus group moderators to bartenders, her great-great aunt to her friend's toddler, to show how only by listening well can we truly connect with others.

Love, calmness, confidence, gratitude, hope and happiness: these are the six emotions that tip the balance of our mind-set in favour of a positive outlook rather than a negative one. Wouldn’t it be great to feel more of these positive emotions? Now you can with Fiona Brennan’s ultimate manual for the mind.
Summary
In an age where self-esteem is seen as essential to mental health, we are seeing unprecedented rises in mental health difficulties from depression anxiety, eating disorders and many others. Is there not a dichotomy at play here? Is self-esteem (i.e., 'I live for my rating') a reality at all or simply a myth we are all buying into?
In this audiobook best-selling author Harry Barry challenges the conventional wisdom and explores why the terms self-acceptance, self-respect and self-actualisation are more helpful in developing positive mental health. In his trademark style he also provides practical examples of what we should all be doing instead to build confidence and reach our full potential.
Part 1: The myth of self-esteem
Part 2: Debunking the myth of 'low self-esteem'
Part 3: Debunking the myth of 'high self-esteem'
Part 4: Debunking the myth 'others can dictate my self-esteem'

A tale of two halves
The first part was interesting where the author presented his case for self-acceptance as the replacement for the god of self-esteem.
The second part of the book was unfortunately heavy with monotonous case studies with implausibly happy outcomes. They seemed designed to justify the author's theory and manifested to me in a form akin to religious dogma.
It was a case of meet the new god same as the old god.
