About this listen
Winslow Birkel is a sweet young man in his first relationship. But his boyfriend, the charming and fiery Chad Loveless, has become increasingly abusive to the point where Winslow fears for his life.
Everything changes in a single night when Winslow, fleeing yet another epic fight, goes out to a local bar and finds a sympathetic ear in a new friend, Darryn Maxwell. But when he comes home, Chad’s waiting. He’s got it in for Winslow, whom he wrongly accuses of being unfaithful.
The stormy night sends Winslow off on a journey to escape. The last thing he recalls is skidding off the road and into the river. When he awakens, he’s mysteriously in the charming seaside town of Seaspray, where people are warm and welcoming, yet their appearances and disappearances are all too inexplicable.
Back home, Darryn wonders what’s happened to the new guy he met during his first outing to the local gay bar, the Q. Darryn knows Winslow’s been abused, but he also feels he’s quickly fallen in love with Winslow.
Can Winslow and Darryn decipher their respective mysteries? Is it possible for them to reunite? Is Chad still lurking and plotting to make sure Winslow never loves anyone else? The answers to these questions await you in Seaspray, where you may, or may not, ever leave.

I’ve enjoyed several other audio books performed by David Allen Vargo and this one was also great. He adds appropriate effects that make the story seem even more real and I will be looking for more audiobooks that he performs.
A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.
Hauntingly beautiful story.

OMG, I just loved Winslow. I wanted to wrap him up in a big hug. I cringed every time he remembered his abusive boyfriend and part of me worried the relationship might deteriorate farther.
And, OMG, I loved Darryn. His inherent kindness and gentle nature spoke to me and I wasn’t surprised Winslow trusted him so quickly.
I can’t go into a lot of detail because I don’t want to give everything away. I will say I found it disturbing to be in abusive Chad’s POV and the random chapter in a woman’s POV was odd and I was never fully satisfied as to why it needed to be there.
All that aside, I loved the book – especially the evocative imagery of living by the ocean – a secret fantasy of mine. Loved the book and thought the narration by David Allen Vargo was, as always, perfect. I highly recommend this book.
Hard to wrap my mind around

Winslow is stuck in an abusive relationship with Chad. Chad has had a messy childhood and really didn't want to be who he is.
And at some point, Winslow decides to leave, because he's had enough of Chad. Only he didn't reckon with Chad. And there's the likable boy Darren, whom Winslow met in a bar and who has his own problems.
The domestic violence and drug problems were realistically portrayed and I was able to quickly empathize with the protagonists. And if you're into a little magical realism, you'll like this story just fine. I suspected what it was about fairly quickly, but I don't want to give too much away at this point.
David Allen Vargo did an excellent job, he deserves 5 stars. He brought the characters to life and gave each character an appropriate voice.
I generally like sound effects in an audio book, but this was a bit too much for me. I like it when music is played briefly, that wasn't my problem. But there were passages where the music was played while the narrator read aloud. Unfortunately, I could not concentrate at these points at all, because I either listen to music or an audio book. Too bad, therefore one star less. The idea was good, but I did not like the implementation quite as much.
A surprising story

On page violet domestic abuse
I loved this story from start to finish. It was so whimsical, like Dorothy in Oz but with much more awful surrounding circumstances. This is also a romance but very low key in the background and there is zero heat. The plot of the story is the main character escaping an abusive partner and waking in this fantasy world where everyone is sweet and everything is pwrfect and where I just like the main character didn't know what was going on and was in suspense til the very end to find out. This was a wonderful original story but a bit intense at times with so.e flashback scenes. The romance is very instalove and unbelievable but the rest of the story is just so neat that I had to give this book 5 stars.
I am so glad I got to listen to this story. The Narration was a pleasure to listen to. He expressed all the emotions and brought the story to life. He gave each of the characters their own distinct voice that suited each of them perfectly. He went above and beyond by adding sound effects and music. I don't always like that it could drown out the words or distract from the story but in this case everything was timed perfectly and it gave even more life to this wonderful story.
Wonderful story and narration
