Summary

A magical French island. A dead contestant. An aspiring baker must clear her name before she gets burned.

Imogen Banks has dreamed her entire life of opening her own bakery in Seattle. But when she accidentally sets fire to her apartment and loses all her possessions, her dreams get toasted. Still coping with her loss, she receives a cryptic invitation she can't possibly refuse: entry into a mysterious baking competition on a beautiful French island.

When Imogen realizes the island village is magical and the Bake-Off’s participants are witches and wizards, she’s not sure her fledgling powers will be enough to win the coveted contest. In the midst of trying to cast her very first spell, a competitor drops dead, and Imogen finds the psychic judges' mystical fingers all pointing at her.

Can Imogen unlock her own magic and stop the killer from coming back for seconds, or will she jump straight from the frying pan and into the fire?

Seashells, Spells & Caramels is the first audiobook in a charming paranormal cozy mystery series. If you like funny heroines, mysterious magical communities, and quirky conspiracies, then you’ll love Erin Johnson’s perfectly witchy recipe.

Witch-tastic

This is the first book by this author that I have listened to but it won't be the last as I really enjoyed it. The main character didn't really investergate the murder but stumbled on the killer and the murder didn't really happen until near the end of the book but that was because the author was setting the scene as to why she was there in the first place, which was fun and amusing. I liked the characters, especially the cranky fire that she has to try and work with.
Imogen doesn't know she is a witch or that magic even exists but when her home burns down and her job is in the balance she has to make a change and by entering a cooking competition she makes a decision that will change her life for ever. The competition is to become a royal baker on a island that few have heard of and where the closest town's people warn her to stay away from. Imogen decides to enter anyway and is soon face to face with mermaid, fire that can talk, shape shifters and the most scariest of all a murder, that wants to win the competition at any cost.
I liked the narrator as she has an easy style of talking which make the characters come alive and fun. I really recommend this book and look forward to starting the next.

Cozy Baking

The narrator does a brilliant job of brining the characters to life. This series has lots of quirky characters. You are kept on your toes through the book guessing who will win and who is the killer. I really enjoyed this book.

Great start to the series

This is a fun witchy mystery and I really enjoyed listening to it. The mystery element was quite light but it was setting up the characters and situation for the rest of the series so I didn’t mind that. It’s like a baking show with a supernatural twist. I’m looking forward to listening to the next book.

Engaging light mystery with a magical twist

As 'cosy mysteries' are big in the USA, but not really a thing in the UK, I was interested in this new to me genre. This is a story for people who don't want gritty or gory, and I really enjoyed the magical world that Imogen finds herself in. The story focuses on a baking competition with a little light romance accompanied by a death or two! I found the narration to be quite fast, and I did get a little irritated with the amount of crying that the characters did to begin with. Maybe I'm a little too British! But I was engaged enough with the story that it wasn't a big problem. An enjoyable listen, and I want to hear what happens next.
I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

A delightful mystery!

This is a delightful mystery that is intriguing and I found myself wanting to know more.
The main character is believable, funny and engaging. Her narration by Hannah Somerville was done excellently, though some of the supporting character narrations were not my favourite.
The world created by Erin pulls from traditional ideas and blends some unique ones of her own. As a reader/listener that made me better able to visualise and follow the plot.
There are Easter egg type clues throughout the story as to who is guilty but also some twists that can throw you off the scent.

Adorable Cozy

I really liked Imogen as a character, she is spontaneous, tenacious and just very well written. In this paranormal cozy, we follow Imogen as she pursues a new life as a baker in the magical world. It's interesting that the author chooses to throw Imogen into the magical contest as a newbie at magic and that Imogen isn't just automatically pick it up. I like that we see the struggle with learning something new, instead of the usual "main character finds out they have magic/powers, becomes instant master of powers overnight"; it gives it a more realistic feel and is unique. Adorable paranormal cozy mystery... and we do end up with a murder that Imogen has a hand in solving.

The narrator gave an excellent performance. She did a really good job conveying the appropriate feelings/expressions at the appropriate time. She really helped bring out Imogen's personality as a character.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

A quirky book

I received this book for free in return for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, it's a very easy book to listen to with nothing taxing. The story is a mix-up of Great British Bake Off with bits of Harry Potter and a mystery too.
The narration is excellent, lots of difference between the characters, the songs are very sweet.

I'm looking forward to listening to the next one.

Love this series!

I have this book in paperback and wanted to try the audio version. Loved it! The narrator was clear and concise and had a variety of character voices that were all really good. Her rendition of "Iggy" was especially enjoyable as he is one of my favorite characters in the book. I never really have tried audio books before and was really pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Keep up the good work!

Fun, Creative, and Entertaining

This is my firs book by Erin and my first Audible listen. The story was easy to follow and kept me interested. I didn't want to turn it off!! Hannah did a great job narrating the book. It felt like a conversation and a story time all in one. The different accents made me smile as I was listening. Can't wait to hear/read more from both of these two!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this audiobook!

I admit, I had a few doubts at the very beginning about the slight Valley Girl voice but I quickly grew to love her and the sounds effects and THE SINGING spells! the narrator is a talented voice actor and I grew more and more impressed the more I listened. She does everything I wish other audiobook narrators would do. I can't rave about this enough and also I am in love with Iggy and want a flame of my own. Erin Johnson, you're my hero. <3

Fun cozy with a bit of mystery

I have read and loved all of the Spells & Caramels books, so I was excited to receive a free Audible copy of the first book. The story was entertaining and fun, and I like Ms Johnson's writing style. The characters are accessible and easy to relate to. The narrator had a pleasant voice, but, in my opinion, spoke too quickly and ran over commas and other pauses like they weren't even there. I would have enjoyed the narration more if there had been a bit more differentiation between the characters, as well. At times it was hard to tell whether it was Sam, Iggy, or Imogen speaking. Overall, I gave the Audible version four stars, because I still enjoyed the story and used my own imagination for the voices I wanted changed.
