Summary

In an early twentieth-century America roiling with racial injustice, class divides, and WWI, two women fight for their dreams in a galvanizing novel by the bestselling author of Golden Poppies.

1915. May and Naomi are extended family, their grandmothers’ lives inseparably entwined on a Virginia plantation in the volatile time leading up to the Civil War. For both women, the twentieth century promises social transformation and equal opportunity.

May, a young white woman, is on the brink of achieving the independent life she’s dreamed of since childhood. Naomi, a nurse, mother, and leader of the NAACP, has fulfilled her own dearest desire: buying a home for her family. But they both are about to learn that dreams can be destroyed in an instant. May’s future is upended, and she is forced to rely once again on her mother. Meanwhile, the white-majority neighborhood into which Naomi has moved is organizing against her while her sons are away fighting for their country.

In the tumult of a changing nation, these two women—whose grandmothers survived the Civil War—support each other’s quest for liberation and dignity. Both find the strength to confront injustice and the faith to thrive on their chosen paths.

Yes another book in the series

I’ve really enjoyed this series. It is well written and contains a number of timeline facts.
I didn’t enjoy the start of the 3rd book at first because I had listened to the others so long ago I got lost in the story. Continuing to listen I was not let down. Yet another great book in a wonderful series.
I recommended this series to friends who equally enjoyed the books also and have gone on the read other books by Laila Ibrahim.

Narrated with the most amazing talent, this is the next chapter in a series that makes history relatable.

This is yet another brilliant book in the series the follows 2 families brought together over generations. It continue to make me really think about history because I cared about these characters. History isn’t a dusty thing that happened in olden times, it’s yesterday, and today will be history soon enough. Left after world war 1, I seriously hope there’s another book to come.

But this book wouldnt be as captivating an audio book without the superb narration. Apparently with ease voicing so many characters without jarring or sounding off once. Only once in nearly 11 hours was I aware that it was a book being read and that was the quoting of the bible chapter and verse after each sentence, it’s was short passage and that’s all I noticed that than was wholly absorbed into. I’m a fussy listener, Bahni Turpin is a seriously talented actor who has read the whole series for us. And I hope listen to her many more times to come.

Scarlet Carnation

As always, a beautiful chapter in the lives of Lisbeth and Mattie’s intertwined families. I cried listening to one particular chapter because it so reminded me of my own experience. If you’ve read or listened to the preceding books, you’ll really enjoy this one.

Bahni Turpin is one of my favourite narrators and she continues this story wonderfully as expected. My only criticism is the extended pauses throughout the book. I believe it to be an editing issue, though rather than a narration issue.
