Summary

Ex-special forces soldier Alex Abbott escaped the Middle East under a cloud and now lives hand-to-mouth in Singapore. Scraping a living as a gun for hire and estranged from his family, Abbott is haunted by ghosts of the past, drinking to dull the pain. Life's tough, but there is one upside - at least he's not in Baghdad.

That's about to change.

When a job goes badly wrong, Abbott's in hot water. Next he learns that his military son, Nathan, is missing in Iraq. Knowing something is wrong, needing to find his son and desperate for redemption, Abbott has no choice but to go back.

Returning to Baghdad, Abbott renews old acquaintances and begins his search for Nathan. The body count rises as old wounds open and he struggles to confront his demons, self-medicating the only way he knows how. But when one of his old crew turns up dead in mysterious circumstances and the link with Nathan is clear, Abbott begins to suspect a trap.

But who is the hunter? And who is the hunted?

40 chapters in and still waiting for something to happen, that's when I have up and switched it off. Disappointing.

Very disappointed after his previous books

I was expecting great stuff after his other books but this one is So boring! overly descriptive about irrelevant stuff, and we get that the main character has a drink problem no need to go on and on about it endlessly in unnecessary detail. I kept giving it chance after chance for the story to pick up and get into the action but after 30 chapters of nothing I gave up.

Well done Ollie

I really enjoyed Ollies first two books so went ahead with this before realising it was fiction. It was a pleasant surprise and right up my street. I really enjoy Andy McNab books and this is in the same remit. It it’s more meaningful having gotten to know Ollie through his other books that the insight he brings to the characters relationship with alcohol, past colleagues and his son comes from a realistic and genuine place. I really look forward to following these books for years to come.

Good times

The story grips and holds your attention and let’s get a mental picture of the events. It takes one back to another time and place.

too much AA.

I listen to be entertained. my heart goes out to you Ollie for having had an addiction but I don't listen to action books for that reason. I could do with far less agonizing over drinking.

Great listen, terrible ending

First I want to say that I enjoyed the flawless narration. It was my first time listening to Colin Mace and I will definitely do so again.
As for the book I thought it lost its way after quite a suspenseful and well paced beginning.
I understand that the main character was a tormented soul, haunted by his past, but I had a hard time bearing through his drinking binges in the middle of such an important mission-when so much was at stake for him.
I could not swallow the big bad nearly invincible super-villain.
But most of all I totally felt cheated by the ending.
I don't think I'll invest time and money in a second book.

A Bit of Downer

There are no heroes here. There are some surprising twists. Well written but rather depressing story.

Can’t stand the main character

I only listened up to chapter 18 and decided I couldn’t waste anymore of my time. The main character is an unlikeable idiot. He is unbelievable as a special forces officer. Just a bunch of DRIBBLE!

Great story, great narration!

The story in this book is very involved and enjoyable. It takes plenty of time to open up and get you started and into the characters, then it takes a couple of fun twists and turns that surprise you as things go along. My only gripe is that there are a few spots where the dialogue does get a little thick, not because it’s bad, not because the author doesn’t know what he’s talking about (he absolutely does), but simply because there is just too much talking in situations that would not afford a lot of chances for conversation. All in all, it is absolutely a five star book. From top to bottom, the narration is wonderful, the story is engaging and fun, and it’s written by a guy that actually knows the sharp end. Thank you for your service, and thank you for your story.
