About this listen
From an early age, comedian and actress Laci Mosley knew her path would be riddled with scams, cons, robberies, and frauds. Little ones. Ones that didn’t hurt people or get her in trouble. But ones that would get her where she needed to be. “You see,” she writes, “everyone’s a scammer and everything’s a scam. Some people are better at it than others, but we all do it. The system wasn’t built for people like me. Scamming saved me and has taught me how to navigate a messy and unfair world while looking out for myself, too.”
In Scam Goddess, Laci recounts how her scammer instincts have guided her throughout her life—from a religious childhood in rural Texas, to a stint as a city bartender at what might have been a drug front, to swindling her way past the gatekeepers of Hollywood—recounting the greatest true-crime scam stories that inspired her along the way. Whether it’s by the beauty industry, capitalism, or the people we date, we’re all getting scammed. In this book, Laci identifies the secrets to flipping the script and coming out ahead.
Editorial Review
Finding
con-fidence
Before this audiobook, I firmly believed that, beyond being immoral, the lifestyle of a professional con artist would be far too glamorous and risqué for me to ever pull off. However, humor can go a long way in changing one’s mind, and with her contagious laughter, podcaster Laci Mosley immediately sold me on her theory that all it takes is a bit of confidence to fake it till you make it—especially in a world that is just one big scam to begin with. This subversive essay collection dares to ask: “If there are no ethical choices under capitalism, why not be a scammer?” It certainly raises several compelling points about how unfair our world can be by the nature of its design. But, above all else, the giddy sense of empowerment that shines through Mosley's voice as she shares her lifelong commitment to fostering a “make your own rules” kind of freedom is truly infectious. — Haley H., Audible Editor
Critic reviews
“Laci Mosley is a hilarious and wise rule breaker and Scam Goddess reminds you there are many ways to ‘live your dream.’” —Amy Poehler
“Laci could scam me into anything (like writing this blurb). Laci always makes me laugh and this book is no different.” —Conan O’Brien
“Laci scammed me into to writing this! Kidding. Laci is one the funniest, most incisive people I know, and this book has all the wit and heart I’ve come to expect as her friend. This book ain’t a scam, it’s a joy.” —Ira Madison III, host of Keep It and author of Pure Innocent Fun
“One of the funniest books I've ever read. . . . Laci is the beautiful and the scammed as she navigates a world trying to keep everyone down, with laugh-a-millisecond honesty and empathy for the people frauding for good. I now have my next ten scams planned and ready. Thank you, Goddess.” —Jamie Loftus, New York Times bestselling author of Raw Dog
“This whole book is a scam. It distracts you with constant laughter but you’re actually learning valuable life lessons and falling deeper and deeper in love with its author.” —Laura Chinn, author of Acne: A Memoir
Laci is a professional and upbeat narrator of the confidence tricks she's developed (and experienced) throughout her life so far. She provides stories both personal and public that show how scams are often simply a matter of convincing other people that they can trust you, because you know what you're doing. Even if you don't.
... but also it's a really open-hearted encouragement to live your best life - and by that I mean : live it for your own true happiness and sense of self-worth.
Having been scammed several times myself: financially, in love and even by my family, I really enjoyed hearing Laci say that a key thing is that there's no shame in being scammed and I agree with her: in my own life I've learnt to move on from that shame, and live the funny, adventurous, vulnerable life that Laci advocates. Do goofy shit? Girl, I've made a lifetime habit of it.
This book is rich, honest, entertaining and gently motivational. It reminded me to remember who I am: the one that everyone around me seems to think knows what she's doing - haha, yeah right.
I don't know how the paper version of this audiobook reads, but with Laci narrating her own story, it's a great audiobook. Laci, I genuinely wish you all the best for a happy and mega-successful future!
