Summary

Omegas for alphas, and betas for betas...

Ori and Patton have been best friends since they were pups. But growing up changes everything - Ori must settle on an alpha to mate, while Patton takes on the beta's work of maintaining the walled enclave their pack lives within.

They try to make the best of it, until a wealthy suitor comes calling for Ori, and they realize neither of them can face a future without the other. And on a moonless night, Ori and Patton escape over the enclave walls, breaking both shifter and human law in their determination to reach the sanctuary of Mercy Hills.

Hunted by their own people and forced into a dangerous masquerade among the humans, their original plan - so simple and direct - turns into a twisted path toward a promise of freedom that might not even exist. Because, Mercy Hills doesn't know they're coming, and the trouble they're bringing to the enclave's doorstep may be more than those already beset shifters are willing to bear.

Finding out Ori is pregnant makes their mission that much more urgent. Omegas never mate with betas, let alone have pups with them. If their pack finds the two lovers, they'll be separated forever. But the pack never reckoned with the determination of a beta in love or the stubbornness of an omega determined to keep his mate and his baby.

Please note: This is a side story in the Mercy Hills Universe that takes place in the space between Legally Mated and Omega's Flight. It it not necessary to listen to this book to enjoy the main series.

as great as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. Nick J Russo is one of the top 5 narrators for me, I can listen without break and have no problems to follow.
I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.

Different narrative to the usual A/O world

I love Ori and Patton's story, getting to know them as they grow up was wonderful.
I love that they weren't the traditional Alpha and Omega pairing and how they fought for their love.
Nick Russo did a wonderful job narrating,
I loved the transition in his characters from childhood to adults.
I was absolutely captivated and engaged.

Part of the Mercy Hills universe

The author gifts their readers/ listeners with an emotional best friends to lovers story. Nick J Russo brings this Beta/ Omega story to life and I can hardly wait for the next Mercy Hills story, because the combination of Ann-Katrin Byrd’s and Nick J Russo is a guaranteed good time.

So enjoyable

I think this is one of my top ten favourite MM reads. I have already read the book 3 times, so I just enjoyed listening to the audiobook this time. And what an enjoyable listen it is.

Despite knowing the book well, I was on the edge of my seat at times from both the excellent storyline and the narration. Nick J. Russo reads with real emotion when required, but is all in for the fun times too. I love how Patton's voice matures and becomes deeper as time progresses while Ori's voice portrays so much of what he is feeling. Nick reads clearly and steadily, important for someone with hearing loss. I had no problem, either, with distinguishing different character voices.

This book was the first Mpreg romance I read with a beta and omega couple, and it opened me up to searching away from the Alpha/omega norm.

Outstanding

What a fabulous journey this book takes us on, not a Mercy hill pack but these two men are making their way to this safe heaven anOmgea and a Beta needs to get to there salvation to have the life they both want....wonderful world building that takes you on their journey with ups and downs, if possible I would have given it more stars. Nick J Russo has done another outstanding job with this story and characters giving it a depth that reading didn't do.

Amazing world building!

Story: wow! The world the author built in the story is absolutely amazing! All the intricacies of the society depicted here are really fascinating and build into a riveting story of coming of age, a journey to a better life and best friends against the world. Loved it! It was hard to keep myself from devouring it in one sitting.
Narration: while the characters differentiation got a bit confusing in multiple people scenes, the voice was very nice and the cadence was really easy on the ear.

quite the adventure

I loved the story, Ori and Patton really take you along for the ride. you get to meet them as pups and are taken on an emotional rollercoaster because these two clearly love each other but can't be together because Patton is a beta and Ori an omega and they just don't mate. alphas for omegas and betas for betas is what they are thought repeatedly. they have to fight for their love and have to make some big decisions with big consequences. another awesome story by Ann-katrin Byrde.
and I love the narrator. he's one of my favorites.

A Daring Escape with Sweet Love

Although this book is considered a side story in the Mercy Hills universe, it’s still a wonderful and significant addition to the overall saga. Like the blurb states, this book is best read just after Legally Mated and right before Omega’s Flight.

Sanctuary expands on the shifter world and gives us perspectives of other shifters not associated with Mercy Hills. Omegas are oppressed and shoehorned into rigid roles with no room for any deviances from what’s expected. But it’s not just Omegas, but all the different dynamics – there’s no room in this hierarchy for a Beta to break free from what’s expected from him to court and mate an Omega. And an Omega can’t accept the attention nor love of a Beta. This has been the obstacle Ori and Patton have been trying to navigate around their entire lives. Ori and Patton have always loved each other, first as best friends and then as star-crossed lovers forbidden from ever expressing that love. And then Ori is faced with a future that is so bleak it devastates him. Once Patton learns about this future, he knows he cannot allow it to come to fruition. So they both make a choice – they decide to no longer allow themselves to be defined by the expectations of their pack, they decide to choose love and each other, they choose to run.

The book has a fast pace as Ori and Patton run and hide from their pack. The plot has a suspenseful edge with the urgency Ori and Patton feel as they head towards Mercy Hills. During their journey, Ori and Patton grow, not only with their love for each other, but also as adults finally allowed to come into their own.

The narration was done wonderfully by Nick J. Russo. He brought the story to life and made it into a performance that was delightful to listen to.

Overall, this book and its narration was a five-star read and listen for me. I adore Mercy Hills and I loved this addition to it. Not only was the plot and characterization phenomenal, but the sex scenes were hot and the love story tender and sweet. I highly recommend this book, but you need to read the series in order to get the full enjoyment out of the story.

Fantastic

Sanctuary is an m/m Shifter Romance with an mpreg that takes place in the Mercy Hills Universe created by Ann-Katrin Byrde. It is about best friends who risk it all to love each other and find freedom to do so. It it a wonderful compliment to the main Mercy Hills series and holds a few special cameos of our favorite characters. The story has sweetness and heat and is a wonderful read.

Nick J Russo narrates this story wonderfully and gives emotion and personality to the characters. Fantastic voicework and recording.

One of my Faves

As a fan of the Mercy Hills Universe, this is one of my favorites. I love the fact that the two MCs grew up together and let no one get in the way of their friendship. They were more than willing to face the unknown to save one another. Having read the book, it was simply amazing to listen to Nick J Russo bring the characters to life. Many times when listening to audible books alone, I find it hard to keep from getting distracted. I didn't have that problem with this narration. Nick did an excellent job with the voices. If you are a Mercy Hills fan, this is a must-listen.

If you are not, what are you waiting for?

Sanctuary

Nick J Russo is a genius when it comes to voices. He kept my attention the entire story. I fell in love with the characters from the beginning. I felt like I was there with the characters on their journey from home to Mercy Hills. Ori is a great Omega and Patton might as well be an Alpha not just a Beta. Their friendship is the most important thing in their lives and of course their eventual love is only natural.

Absolutely Terrific!!

Sanctuary is part of the Mercy Hills series by Ann-Katrin Byrde, and is definitely one of the favourites of mine in the series.

This is the first book in the series where the plotline doesn’t play out anywhere near the Mercy Hills onclave until the very end of the book, and we obtain a wider view of the shifter world and the human world of the universe AKB created.

This is a sweet love story filled with adventure and is very different from all the Mercy Hills books until now.

The story follows Ori and Patton, childhood friends to lovers, who work together to overcome everything that comes between them, finally finding no other choice but to escape their birth onclave and then face the challenge of surviving as renegades, posing to be humans, in a world that is hostile towards shifters but is also very similar to our own world.

This story gives us a better idea of the way Omegas are raised in other packs, and the very narrow world-view of what is an appropriate life for an Omega.

Ori, the omega in this story, has a very adventurous spirit and despite trying his best to conform to the norms that are to be expected of him, he never gives up on and cherishes the friendship and secret love he harbours for his childhood friend Patton.

Patton, on his end, is heartbroken to find out he would never be allowed to mate Ori because he is a Beta and not an Alpha.
But on the day when Ori comes to him in desperate need to escape an arranged mating that was completely different from what he expected, Patton devices a plan for the two of them to escape.

The two go on an adventure that puts all their skills and ability to work together test - Patton’s way of macgyvering solutions, and Ori’s tale-spinning ability to make up stories to cover their identities, and find practical solutions that allow them to survive.

The duo are a unique and sweet pair, and I found myself rooting for them and holding my breath whenever danger struck again and again.
Between the moments where I feared for the dear two boys, were sweet, heartwarming moments of love, devotion and mutual admiration of each other between the young couple.

Nick’s narration as in all the Mercy Hills books is absolutely spectacular, as he captures each of the characters and give them each a unique voice.
Best of all - he even sings towards the end of the book!

In this book there are also a peak at a young Holland mated to the Alpha who eventually repudiates him, and a brief, yet heartfelt encounter with an omega called Felix, who has a book of his own later in the series and which I can’t wait to listen to in the future.

This is definitely one of the Mercy Hills books I will revisit again in the future.

A powerful story of love

I loved listening to the journey Ori and Patton embarked on just to be together. This story was beautiful. The innocence and love the two had was so genuine it touched my heart. During the few struggles that could have ruined it all, I found myself praying the two would make it. I was completely riveted by the world building and characters.

Nick J Russo did a wonderful job. I could feel the emotions coming from the characters and loved it.

Job well done writing and narration!

I loved how the narrator gave not different voices for each character but emotional depth as well.
