Summary
Based on true events.
1942. The war at sea is being lost. One percent of all naval personnel are being referred to as psychiatric casualties. The British Admiralty introduces the Stone Frigate approach.
Three men fight for their country in the Arctic convoys of World War II, then for their sanity and dignity, labelled as cowards and subjected to experimental psychiatry at an isolated facility set up to by the British Admiralty to recycle men back into battle.
To the Navy, they are faulty parts, not constitutionally suited to operate at sea. To the public, they are poltroons, malingerers, and psychiatric cases.
The places in this story are real, but everyone who played a part in what happened is now dead. It is safe to tell what really happened. What was important then, nobody cares about now.
True courage is facing danger when you are afraid, surviving in the circus of war.

Excellent in every respect
This is a compelling listening experience - very well-researched background to each man's story, a clever approach to the subject of the effects of war fought at sea on the physical and mental health of sailors whose experiences are hard to comprehend. Kenny Lindsay's narration is excellent, delivered with clarity, good emphasis on the high consonants, and perfect pace.

Interesting, shocking, well narrated.
A Sailor’s heart
Clarence, Marco and Duncan are all serving in the Royal Navy during WWII and are each suffering with a different mental health condition that have all come about for very different reasons. They soon find themselves unable to perform their duties and are sent to be incarcerated at HMS Standard, a psychiatric camp set up in the middle of a vast, boggy moor. Their aim, to get dysfunctional seamen well enough to return to duty in as short a time as possible. Here they are subjected to tests, assessments and inhumane treatments including insulin overdoses. It highlights brilliantly the ignorance surrounding mental illness and a terrible lack of understanding of it’s consequential physical symptoms in days gone by.
This is a tale of three men, their lives before and during their time of service and their subsequent treatment at HMS Standard and the ‘Stone Frigate Approach’.
Although this is a work of fiction, it is based on truth and illustrates events which did indeed take place and have been extensively researched by the author.
A thoroughly enjoyable, if somewhat disturbing listen. Thought provoking and extremely interesting.
The Narration is excellent. I could listen to that beautiful Scottish accent every single day.

Heart
I loved the narration of Kenny Lindsay, perfect for this book.
This is a great book, that will take you in the life of the brave men going to sea to fight a war., in 1942. and the war at sea is being lost.
We meet three men who are fighting for their country in the Arctic convoys of World War II. Learning how to deal with isolation and being kept into battle after battle. Coping with their sanity and dignity, labelled as coward.
The places in this story are real, the pain is real and these men are all heroes.
