Summary

The deliciously witty, irresistible new novel from the top 10 Sunday Times best-selling author of Not Quite Nice follows the exploits of two women on an Atlantic cruise ship.

The phone hasn't rung for months. Suzy Marshall is discovering that work can be sluggish for an actress over 60 - even for the former star of a 1980s TV series. So when she's offered the plum role of Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest in Zurich, it seems like a godsend. Until, that is, the play is abruptly cancelled in suspicious circumstances, and Suzy is forced to take a job on a cruise ship to get home.

Meanwhile, Amanda Herbert finds herself homeless in rainy Clapham. Her flat purchase has fallen through, and her children are absorbed in their own dramas. Then she spots an advertisement for an Atlantic cruise and realises a few weeks on board would tide her over - and save her money - until the crisis is solved.

As the two women set sail on a new adventure, neither can possibly predict the strange characters and dodgy dealings they will encounter - nor the unexpected rewards they will reap. Vividly evoking the old-world glamour of a cruise ship - and the complex politics of its staff quarters - Sail Away is at once a hilarious romp and a thrilling tale of intrigue, from the acclaimed pen of Celia Imrie.

Light distraction

Very easy listening. Rather too neatly tied up at the end but still very enjoyable

Not for me

I couldn’t engage with the 2 main characters who both seemed a little bitter. Too much time was spent setting the scene and even when the main plot was revealed it was still too meandering. The voices used were irritating and I nearly gave up when the author’s dissatisfaction with Brexit was worked into the book because there’s enough mention of it in real life without it gatecrashing my evening escapism!

Consider carefully before buying

This book has clearly not met with the red pen of an editor. It screams out for a ruthless edit

It is horrible overly wordy Repetitive and badly written. The characters lack credibility and are clumsily created . It’s almost farcical .

Celia reads her book with her usual charm and is an endearing and entertaining narrator

Sadly her writing skills are less worthy
The story lacks all credibility is infuriatingly long winded. It’s not a book I could recommend to anyone .

Really good!

Pure escapism and enjoyment. I listened to it all in just over 2 days, which is very unusual for me. She has such a lovely voice to listen to and creates the “pictures of the story “ so well ...many thanks Celia Imrie!!

Disappointed

Couldnt finish this book as I lost interest. I'm afraid the story dragged and there was no incentive in the plot to keep you listening.

Sail Away

A book which includes a relevant and sensitively written topic within a day to day believable storyline.

Excellent story

I really enjoyed this book by Celia Imrie. The story was a little implausible at times but it was a good story and narrated excellently!
