About this listen

In the 1930s, Emma Pearson and her family offered a rural holiday to two orphaned children. Despite being unable to adopt John and Tommy as their own, the Pearsons stayed in touch over the years, treating them as family.

When World War II breaks out, tragedy strikes as John is killed at Dunkirk. Emma is worried about her daughter, Bella, who seems very tired, is working long hours as a Land-Army girl, and is taking sleeping tablets at night. Her other daughter, Emily, is recovering from injuries inflicted during a London air raid. And Tom's landlady, Daisy Gaskin, is upset when her eldest daughter is arrested for possession of stolen goods.
