Summary

Caleb has spent the last six months adjusting to life possessed by the vampire spirit Gray and hunting demons with their boyfriend, federal exorcist John Starkweather.

Unfortunately, the other agents of SPECTR view Caleb and Gray as a ticking time bomb. Their frustration mounts as the new district chief puts more and more restrictions on them. John wants to help, but he has problems of his own. Charleston is in the grip of an outbreak of demon possession, and the human members of SPECTR have been pushed to the brink.

But Caleb and Gray have a new ally: the drakul Drugoy and his host, Yuri Azarov. Yuri and Dru live by no mortal’s rules, and they can show Caleb and Gray how to do the same...depending on how far they’re willing to go.

Because ultimately, Caleb and Gray must decide where they belong: with the only other living drakul, or at the side of the man they love.

Absolutely loved it, once again

I really enjoyed the first series and it stuck with me. Whereas usually I hear books and move on and don’t think about them again - even when I like them - because I listen to so very many, the first series stood out. I was delighted when the second series became available on Audible, but also apprehensive that I wouldn’t enjoy it as much and I might have seen the first series with rose tinted glasses. Glad to say it was brilliant. The world that is woven is really rich so I got completely absorbed in the story and the characters. The boss being awful was a little too pantomime and over the top for my taste, but it did add to the story so it didn’t make me rate the book any lower. Really sad the story is now over! The final book in the series was particularly good so it ended on a high. What a bargain to get a whole series for one credit, too.

Fantastic storytelling, frustrating narration

I want to emphasize that I enjoyed this story immensely, especially the last book & a half of the series within this volume, which contained near constant suspense. I wanted to know how it would all end faster, but then as the ending approached, i didn't want it to end, because well, then it would be over. (I know there's a 3rd series in process, but still). I loved the new side characters introduced, at least the "good guys," and absolutely hated the bad guys, as one should. So far as the narration...meh. The voices are pretty well differentiated, but not consistent. As in, Gray's voice changes over time, becomes even slower & deeper, and sometimes Caleb appears to have a bit of a southern accent, but other times, he does not. A side character, who is Muslim, begins without an accent, with it specifically mentioned how she has lived in the US all her life, and then in the next book within the volume, she suddenly has a totally different accent. The same occurred with another character, who suddenly had an accent he didn't before. The voice of the old district chief was different in this volume than in the first volume. I binge-listened to The Complete First Series as a re-listen, followed immediately by a binge of this Complete Second Series, so these inconsistencies might have been more obvious to me than to someone taking them at a slower & more intermittent pace though. Over all, I would DEFINITELY recommend the book itself - it is excellent - but if I'd owned the print and had more time to focus on print, I would've switched to that route. Since audio narration comes down so much to personal taste, this is just for my own personal feelings.

Good story. Good narration.

Interesting plot. Nicely written story. I had some trouble connecting with the characters emotionally. I really wanted to smack them upside the head sometimes. Overall a good listen and worth the credit.

Entertaining series

Author has created an interesting and entertaining world. Characters engage sympathy and empathy. One serious negative. Brad Langer, narrator, changed the voice of Caleb/Gray to a slow cadence, making Gray much less intelligent, a more reptilian brain powered entity. Sad about that.

Monster mayhem and characters with heart

No one does monster mayhem better than Jordan Hawk. But there is much more to her stories. They have heart, soul, and characters that pull you in. Loved it. The narration is just okay, confusing voice distinctions making character identification difficult too many times.

good series - though annoying mc's

I like the series. I do. Though, how annoying are they!?! Caleb is acting like a darn spoiled teen. and John has no spine at all. they are both cowards, letting things fly whithout standing up for themself or go to the next in command. how about showing some decency and common sence! plus some back bone could come in handy. I am so darn annoyed!

A bit of a disappointment

The story was just as great as the first series but the narrator was a let down. He did such a great reading of the first series and I was really excited to see he was reading the second as well but his voices were not only different from the first series they were inconsistent throughout this series. Also he was reading Grey’s voice so painfully slowly it made him seem slow mentally as well. In the first series it was so much better with almost perfect timing that at times was epic. Overall I loved the series but for this one, only for the great writing and not the narration

Great Story

This is a great overall story and a wonderful value for the credit. However, around Book 3, the accents and voices used for the characters changed completely. I was not fond of this. Also, a couple of the characters changed accents. So, not the best narration I have heard.
