 In Brisbane, Australien, startet ein kleines Schiff, das nur für die Küstenschifffahrt ausgelegt ist, in Richtung San Francisco. Ein Bordfunker ermöglicht einem Mann, der nach USA möchte, als blinder Passagier mitzukommen. Dieser wird im Laderaum, in dem die Fracht, eine Ladung Wolle, untergebracht ist, versteckt. Aufgrund der Wetterlage kommt das Schiff nur sehr langsam voran. Dem blinden Passagier, der nur in der Dunkelheit ist, wird das zu eng und zu langweilig. Er zündet eine Kerze an. Die Wolle beginnt zu brennen. Bald brennt das ganze Schiff. Die Besatzung kann sich auf Beiboote retten und treibt im Meer...
