Every time I speak to someone and hear about their experiences, it leaves me with a sense of running’s incredible power to help people overcome pretty much anything.

Each day, millions of people around the world put on their sneakers and try to deal with their personal demons and life challenges by going for a run. And, increasingly, they do it knowing that they are not alone: A growing and often virtual community is right there running alongside them. We are all, in some sense, running for our lives.

Rachel Ann Cullen’s first book, Running for My Life, described her own marathon journey through depression, bipolar disorder and body dysmorphia, and her revelatory discovery that running could transform her physical and mental well-being. Since hearing from people who had read about her experiences, Rachel wanted to tell some stories of other runners from all around the world—ordinary people living with mental health struggles, dealing with grief, cancer, and other unavoidable life events who have relied on running to get them through their worst days and to keep going.

Running for Our Lives shares moving accounts of hope and resilience; it demonstrates the power of running to help us all overcome adversity, and is a lesson for us all in learning not only how to survive life’s challenges but to thrive.

First of all, author-read audio books are generally far superior than acted ones, especially when the story is so personal as is the case with Rachel Ann Cullen's Running For Our Lives. While the book has a strong thread of running going through it, it is actually about the people Rachel has met along her journey and the ways they have got into running or found something from running. It is not a book about running it is a book about people who happen to do a bit of running. In fact I've probably mentioned running more in this review than Rachel does in the book.
Who will like this book? For me the bit I identified with, found relatable, was how some things; whether it be watching a good movie, reading a book or going outside and getting some exercise really do make the world seem a better place, and maybe if you need to find inspiration to do that or just want to identify with people who have then this is a great listen.

I thought this book was well written and enjoyed listening to the author narrate it. But I did find the stories hard going - many were difficult to hear and some were pretty triggering for anyone who has experienced anything similar. I found I didn’t look forward to going back to the book, which was a shame as the stories are told so well. I thought it would be uplifting, but I ended up feeling down after listening to it. A mixed experience but well done to Rachel for tackling such difficult subject matter so well and sharing some incredible people’s stories.

Emotive and passionate stories about what running means to people. I wanted to like this book as someone who runs and sees the wider value that moving more beings to people and their lives and the stories in this book didn’t disappoint. We’ll written and easy to listen to the author approaches a range of topics with the thought and empathy that they deserve.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when choosing this audiobook. I love running, it’s part of my life, and was interested to hear what role it can have for others. I really liked the structure of the book and the small insight into each person’s life. Some I wanted to keep hearing more about and wonder what else there is to learn about those individuals. I was definitely more drawn to some than others. Stand out quotes and things to take away include: “The strength of making a commitment to yourself”. Through listening to
others’ stories and challenges faced by some people every day makes me reflect on my own life in an inspiring way. Fascinating and wonder if she’ll do a follow up. Would recommend it.
