About this listen

A blindsided soon-to-be divorcée rediscovers herself in this witty, celebratory novel about a hard-fought comeback by the authors of The Better Half.

Two decades have passed since Callie Kingman begrudgingly followed her husband, Thomas, across the country in pursuit of his career at the expense of her own. Today, Callie is an empty nester with no job prospects, a declining mother, and a spouse who announces his intention to leave her—in Sacramento, the dullest city in America. His parting potshot: “It’s not me, it’s you.”

Taking to bed, Callie relies on delivery for food, her neighbor for booze, and her college best friend for commiseration. When an overdue annual exam leads to a health scare, Callie is forced to contend with her fractured and unfulfilled life by revisiting the vibrant, indomitable woman she used to be.

From her idyllic years at Princeton and an extraordinary first love to the pressures all women face to strive, serve, and be sexy as hell, once again she’s face-to-face with it all. Callie is running for her life, determined to forge a path ahead that is better than the one she’s leaving behind.

Critic reviews

Run for Your Life, Callie Kingman is a witty, heartwarming love story wrapped in the resilient spirit of starting over. Set against a vibrant backdrop of ’90s nostalgia, the story follows Callie Kingman, a freshly dumped protagonist navigating the mess and beauty of middle age. With sharp humor and tender insight, Alli Frank and Asha Youmans deftly explore the unexpected ways a woman’s life and identity evolve when children fledge the nest, her marriage falls apart, and she must re-create herself for the next act. I loved every page!”—Danielle Girard, USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of Pinky Swear

Run for Your Life, Callie Kingman is a soul-affirming love song to Gen X women. I laughed and nodded my way through every page, relating to and rooting for Callie until the satisfying end, and wondering along the way: How did Frank and Youmans crawl into my brain? Run, don’t walk, to read this gem. It’s a winner!”—Samantha Greene Woodruff, bestselling author of The Lobotomist’s Wife and The Trade Off

We’re busy, us ‘women of a certain age’. Which is probably why there are so few representations from the perspective of those women.

Yet here this is. A brilliant novel which puts the voices and experiences of those women front and centre.
And it is brilliant.
The characters are drawn with humility and humanity.
Very funny, sometimes sad, occasionally wistful and an incredibly satisfying read.

I’m not going to give spoilers, though as the story begins we are plunged into the centre of Callie’s life at a pivotal moment.
Callie has friends - brilliant friends, characters so well described that you know them - they help to bodily drag Callie through her crisis and the ensuing ups and down.

The novel does not flinch from the realities of being a woman in late middle age, now. Whilst simultaneously showing those lives through that humorous lens we all employ just to get ourselves through.

Full of heart, a fantastic read that kept me reading until the end.

I’ve never read anything by these authors, now I will definitely be looking out for their work and particularly collaborations like this one.

Funny, relatable, brilliant - a USA Marian Keyes
