Summary

A moving story of overlapping lives from the Orange Prize-winning author of Bel Canto

Tip and Teddy are becoming men under the very eyes of their adoptive father, Bernard Doyle. A student at Harvard, Tip is happiest in a lab, whilst Teddy thinks he has found his calling in the Church, and both are increasingly strained by their father's protective plans for them.

But when they are involved in an accident on an icy road, the Doyles are forced to confront certain truths about their lives, how the death of Doyle's wife Bernadette has affected the family, and an anonymous figure who is always watching...

Critic reviews

‘[S]pectacular... Full of suspense, exciting and unpredictable, this is a novel that keeps you guessing until the end.' (Viv Groskop)

'Run is a novel with timeless concerns at its heart – class and belonging, parenthood and love... The book...is satisfyingly bold in its attempt to say something patient and true about family.' (Andrew O'Hagan)

Fantastic

Spell binding novel and very well performed. As with other reviews- my one gripe was also the musical interludes! distracting from what was otherwise a really wonderful telling of this story.

Superb and riveting read.

A total page turner, beautifully written. There are enough 5 star reviews to convince! I’m going to ask for there never to be music like this which is not only irritating but really difficult to listen to the story as it jingles.

A beautiful story of character and family and the world they inhabit.

I loved this telling of Ann Patchett’s story of a family/families, society and driving passions. My one complaint is the distracting music that ended some parts and then opened the next. If they could be deleted, it would be my perfect audiobook.

Wonderful

I love Ann Patchett’s writing and this was a great story. The narrator rendered the different characters well. The interview with the author was very interesting and an added bonus. The only thing I disliked was the musical interludes - totally unnecessary, in style not at all in keeping with the narrative, and jarring.

Lovely book, badly narrated

Really enjoyed this book an unual story, beautifully written, but the narrator nearly ruined this for me, and the musical interludes were bizarre

Hmmmm?

I read this novel after finishing The Dutch House, my first Ann Patchet book. I'd remembered thinking what a thumping good storytelling it had been (perhaps the narration had a great deal to do with that).
Here, with Run, I felt an underlying irritation, a sense of "Just get on with it!". If I say anymore, I'll be guilty of writing spoilers.
...for a story to stand out, it has to be compelling. This novel was good, it was not compelling
