Summary

In essa lo scrittore, attraverso la vicenda del protagonista Rosso Malpelo, un povero ragazzo orfano dai capelli rossi che lavora in una cava di sabbia della Sicilia, descrive la durezza delle condizioni di vita e la realtà di sfruttamento della gente siciliana. Questo testo dà inizio alla fase verista dello scrittore: Rosso ha colto completamente l’essenza della legge che regola la vita, cioè la lotta per la vita, in cui prevale il più forte.
