Critic reviews

"A police procedural that delights the reader with a strong sense of place. Tartan Noir at its best." (Sarah Ward, author of In Bitter Chill)

Really enjoyed this. The plot was exciting but believable as were the characters. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more books by this author.

Well written and gripping

Ok story though with some racist language that should perhaps have been flagged or just omitted. The biggest problem was the reader. I’d book him for Biggles and that’s about it.

Didn’t like the reader

But it’s surprising that a story deeply rooted in politics and events not so long ago already feel like old history. And still the aftermath is still there and some old conflict become a future threat again. The investigation team has some interesting back story as well but I’d hoped for more suspense from the diversity of characters. A good start for a series though and I’m happy to look for more to see where the group of characters get next.

A good story to get a wish for more

Some of the reviewers gave negative comments on the dated feel to the language and behaviours around sexism and racism but I felt that was actually pretty believable. I couldn’t get behind the lead character, he was really half baked.
Narrator didn’t sound credible at all. The Scottish and Welsh accents were almost caricatured and his whiny falsetto female voices did a disservice to the book.

Too much emphasis on lead character’s infatuation with younger woman
