Summary

Even one-night stands deserve a second chance in New York Times bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken’s novel of sporting desire.

What else can a virgin do when she’s ditched at the altar? Seattle heiress Mackenzie Dupont is treating herself to a single-girl honeymoon in Mexico and a desire to relinquish her innocence to a gorgeous one-night stand. Fake names. True pleasure. But when she wakes up alone, Mackenzie realizes just how much anger is left in her broken heart.

Suffering a tragic personal loss, pro soccer player Slade Rodriguez has his reasons for vanishing without a goodbye. Right or wrong, he’s blaming the beautiful and infuriating stranger he never wants to see again. They’re both in for a shock when Mackenzie shows up as his new personal assistant. And they both have a lot to learn about each other. Because they share more than they could possibly know, including a common enemy who’s playing his own games. And he’s not afraid to get dirty.

Now there’s only one way Mackenzie and Slade can win: to trust in each other and to stop hiding from the lies they’ve told, the secrets they’ve kept, the mistakes they’ve made, and the attraction that still burns between them.

This book has it all!

I am actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Once I found out this book had the audio included on Kindle Unlimited, I quickly grabbed it… the fact that it was about a soccer player was just icing on the cake! Mackenzie and Slade meet when they both take a trip to Mexico as a little escape from their lives. In typical romance fashion, they hit it off and spend an amazing day together until real life butts in and tragedy strikes. After they return to their lives in Seattle, they get thrown together again and they try to fight the attraction. Mack tries to hang out with an old friend, Slade gets jealous, her ex causes problems, punches are thrown. Really, this book has drama, comedy, romance and the cutest bulldog with a gas problem!

The narration was great for these characters. I’ve listened to CJ Bloom before and I always enjoy her bringing the characters to life. Eric London was a new narrator for me but I really enjoyed him. His voice for Matt was a little annoying, but since Matt always seemed to be fed up I could completely see him sounding like that!

Rachel weaves a story that traps you in her web!

When an author can effortlessly tell a story that brings you in and keeps you wanting more, that is the definition of talented writer. Rachel has done that in previous books I have read and this story pulled me in from the start and never let go.

The narration was excellent and let me visualize the story as the author intended. I know that the ladies will love Eric but CJ has the inflection down for every emotion!!

No spoilers ever!

I see that Matt has the next story but I am hoping that Jagger will also get his own book! The dynamic development between the characters is excellent and, in my opinion, realistic. We often have an opinion of someone we don't know that changes once we get to know them.

The premise is semi-plausible as two people meet after life changing circumstances occur. There are plenty of people who could not identify a sports star, no matter how many magazines they appear in. This is a story based on mistaken identities, preconceived notions jumping to conclusions.

Slade gets devastating news and does what many people do when they feel like they haven't been the person they should have been, he deflects and blames Mack. She goes back home feeling used and upset with her decisions and her former fiance and works for a subsidiary of her company (even though she is worth millions) to avoid conflict. Of course, she starts to work for Slade and the fireworks begin. Throw in Jagger and her ex, and the story just keeps getting better. There are lots of funny moments (and when listening on Audible while walking around, people will give you strange looks), happy, sad and thought provoking moments mixed throughout this book.

If you only want reality, the non-fiction section might be a better place to look. Rachel tells a story to give you a break from reality and the ridiculous political environment (both parties) we are in and I truly appreciate that. No preaching about political or social issues, just great storytelling.

I'll take more of Slade

I do love RVD. I haven't met a book of hers I haven't liked. Risky Play is another hit.

I fell in like with Slade as the plane's engines failed. I fell for Mack around the time she stumbled into him after their one night stand.

Lust ensued. Feelings, lust, anger, love, pain, hate, joy, sadness. Jealousy. Betrayal.

Yep. RVD puts it all in a book. And she always manages to do it flawlessly. I can't wait for the next book, although I'm a touch disappointed it isn't Jagger's book.

I loved this story so much!

This story is one you will truly enjoy. I was hooked at page one. I also listened to the audio as I read along. The narrator's were fantastic. They get 5 stars too...so, so good. 💚💚💚💚💚. Just so you know, there are parts where you'll be laughing out loud so be prepared for a few funny looks if you're in public.

So just a tiny recap for you...
Mackenzie DuPont was dumped at the alter. She decides to go on her honeymoon trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico...alone.
Slade Rodriguez, a European Football star, is taking a short vacation in Puerto Vallarta before he reports to his new team in Seattle. Slade and Mackenzie meet on the plane on their way to Mexico in quite an interesting way. 😂. Of course STUFF HAPPENS, good and bad. Bahahaha. Now go grab a copy and see all the crazy, zany and interesting things for yourself. You're going to Love this whole cast of characters. I'm really looking forward to the next book that's hopefully about one of Slade's buddies.

Fun listen

This one is full of romance, laughter, angst, and a dog will very bad gas! Alton did a number on Mack. She lost her confidence and Slade was just the right person to help her heal, just like she helped him heal. I tried hating Slade for his behaviour towards Mack but I just couldn't, because ppl deal with grief in different ways. Watching the two of them try to figure out their lives, friendship, and relationship was just beautiful. Add in Slade's love / hate relationship with Jagger and his friendship with Matt, I just couldn't put this book down. Risky Play was truly a joy to read. If you're looking for a book to laugh out loud, feel their pain, and their love then I highly recommend Risky Play.

New Book BoyFriend Alert!

Wow! I really love this book!! I wasn’t sure if I was going enjoy this at first. I was thinking where can this go? Well I am impressed. The back and forth between these two MC’s is fast...and it’s not all fun banter. Many times I was sad for Mackenzie then to turn around and feel for Slade. Then i would laugh at something silly or smile right along with Mackenzie. As you can see a gambit of emotions. I can really see why Mackenzie/Slade hesitates after their past. Trust issues are no joke and s/he have them. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure Slade is my new BBF. Sorry Mackenzie...I loved seeing all sides of him and his personal growth is great.

These secondary characters are amazing! I really can’t help but love them. Each one is unique but they all have an element of fun. Jagger! Dang! Could you be any hotter? Not only a rockin bod but also the kindness to add to it. Matt you are so funny with your antics...seriously though I don’t know how you control those guys. Matt and Jagger....I cant wait for your books!

I listened to this on audio. I don’t think I will ever forget Slades voice performed by Eric London. That sexy drawl/accent was amazing! Not knocking CJ Bloom she did great as well!

This is my new favorite book and one of the BEST I have read this year! This is going on my re-read shelf but probably for listening (Thank You Eric😁). I really can’t say enough nice things about this story. It is so so good and it lightened my heart! I LOVE smiling and laughing while reading/listening. Dont you?

A soccer player, a bulldog & a sommelier

Great story with lots of humor, some angst and a little bit of ‘ex-drama’. Best of all is a bulldog named Alfie...with gas issues!! Definitely a must read/listen!
