Summary

When he wakes in a pitch-black room with his hands bound, Roland Britten – accountant and champion steeplechase jockey – knows he’s entered a nightmare of someone else’s making.

Wracking his brain to figure out who’s out to get him and why, he comes up empty, but somehow manages a death-defying escape. It isn’t long, though, before he’s recaptured. Now, with his life at stake, he must take every risk to outsmart his well-disguised enemy and save himself ...

Audiobook file is faulty - missing a big chunk

What did you like most about Risk?

It's a great book but the audio book has dreadful sound quality and there is a big chunk of the story missing, avoid this version until audible fix it.

Any additional comments?

Too many old recordings like this are being resold as downloadables without any checks on sound quality or continuity. I've had a few faulty files and the quality needs to be improved (sound remastering / qc) before audible sells them. Shame as its a cracking story.

Great tale. Good mystery and suspense

What did you like best about this story?

Enjoyed the scenarios and the "hero's" relationships with the 2 women were interesting and not entirely predictable.

What about Tony Britton’s performance did you like?

Good at differentiating between the characters

Any additional comments?

Have listened to it several times with much enjoyment

No Problem With Sound Quality

Audiobook purchased early 2022. To my ears there was no problems with the sound quality. I think Audible must have fixed the issues that have been reported earlier.
Excellent reading by Tony Britton. I’ve always found Tony Britton to be the perfect narrator of Dick Francis’s books.

Problems with audio seem to be fixed

To start I should say that I was nervous about downloading this one due to many reviews saying parts of the audio were missing, but I was downloading in Jan 2021 and audible must have fixed the download because there was nothing missing here. The track is a little grainy but fine to listen to.

The plot is standard Francis - accountant and part time jockey gets mixed up with some wrong-uns without realising why and then had to fathom out who is behind it all from a cast of half a dozen possibles.

For me, neither his best (I like some of the early ones better like Nerve and For Kicks) or worst (Flying Finish and Rat Race), but somewhere in the middle. Worth a credit and will listen to it again in a few months.

Recording quality ok, narration good, plot decent.

Great story

Unfortunately marred by poor recording - but a great story and excellent narration as usual.

Tony Britton and Dick Francis. What a combination

A well written story read by an extremely able story teller. Paradise!! Mr Britton is wonderful with the various voices and accents. I can't praise him highly enough.

Kept one guessing

Good pace, with twists along the way so you never knew what was coming next.
