About this listen
The brooding hero, gypsy Jake Lovell, under whose magic hands the most difficult horse or woman becomes biddable, is driven to the top by his loathing of the darling of the show ring, Rupert Campbell-Black.
Having filched each other’s horses, and fought and fornicated their way around the capitals of Europe, the feud between the two men finally erupts with devastating consequences at the Los Angeles Olympics.

I'm not ashamed to say I've always loved Jilly's Rutshire chronicles, Rupert, Taggie and all the rest of the huge cast. Because the saga spread over so many years it's easy to re-read the later ones and overlook the start, and Riders is where it all began.Gerri Halligan reads this beautifully, and the set pieces like Macaulay going for Rupert in the World Championship and the Olympic Gold in LA really come to life.
I'm sorry that Tory and Jake never figure strongly after this book because they both had the potential to follow through as interesting characters, but as by far the glaringly weakest spot in the whole book is the less than believable 'miracle recovery' for Tory that may be the reason.
So Audible, why are only the first in the series, Riders, and the latest, Jump, recorded? You can't include Wicked, it's abridged. Gerri Halligan gives a great performance and could more than cope with all the others. Where are Rivals, Polo, Score, The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous and all the rest? Let's have Lysander, Rannaldini and all the other characters.... Please?
I'd forgotten how much fun this was

Would you consider the audio edition of Riders to be better than the print version?
I wouldn't compare the two, listening to the book on the go you get less drawn in also the narrator's voices for Rupert, Jake and on occasion Billy sound too similar. What other book might you compare Riders to, and why?
Rivals by Jilly Cooper, Jilly 's writing is rather formulaic.Did Gerri Halligan do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
On the whole yes but to be honest I feel a male narrator may have been better. This story is all about the male characters, the Rupert Campbell Black in my head has a clipped rather cold drawl but the narrator managed to make him sound like a sulky grown up version of the children's character Horrid Henry.Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There are lots of typical JC one liners and very moving parts when animals die and catastrophe strike.Any additional comments?
If you like JC and enjoyed the book you won't be disappointedBrilliant Jilly
