Il nome di Spartaco è legato alla terza e più nota delle guerre cosiddette servili, ribellioni di schiavi e non solo, che afflissero lo Stato romano fra secondo e primo secolo a.C. Il libro mostra come quella guerra sia in realtà l'episodio ultimo di una serie di eventi a sfondo sociale e civile che coinvolsero una "seconda" Italia a lungo emarginata. All'indomani di conflitti che avevano lasciato strascichi spaventosi di rovine, lutti, odio, Spartaco fu colui che, ultimo, riuscì a coagulare attorno a sé lo scontento delle popolazioni meridionali, soprattutto appenniniche, non ancora integrate. Anche se Crasso mise fine alla guerra, Roma, provata, fu infine costretta a cedere pienamente alle richieste degli Italici.
