‘Utterly inspiring and empowering’ Jennie Godfrey

'Ten shades of extraordinary’ Rosie Walsh

I was fifty-five when I finally stopped pretending.

What if real freedom isn’t about reinventing yourself… but about letting the woman you buried years ago grow wild again?

To the world, Jane Green had everything: bestselling novels, a beautiful home, the perfect family. Inside, she was disappearing, squeezed into the roles of wife, mother, provider, eternal people-pleaser while her marriage cooled, her children flew, and her own dreams gathered dust.

Then she stopped squeezing herself into shapes that didn’t fit.

Rewilding is the raw, exhilarating story of what happened next. Of rediscovering the loud, messy, paint-splattered art student she once was. Of choosing meaningful friendships over obligation, creativity over perfection, and the truth over silence. Of learning – messily and joyfully – that home isn’t a place you build for other people. It’s the life you dare to live for yourself.

Part memoir, part battle cry, Rewilding is for any woman who has ever felt invisible in her own story. And it’s proof that surrender could be the most radical act of all… and that the most powerful thing you can do is stop trying to be good, and start being free.

For readers of Glennon Doyle, Elizabeth Gilbert and Brene Brown.

Who would you be if you stopped caring what anyone else thought?

I was introduced to Rewilding by my friend Jaymie, who read it in just two days after it was released. When she showed me her copy, it was filled with little Post-it notes marking all the passages that had resonated with her. Jaymie is a very spiritual person, so I had a feeling that if this book had touched her so deeply, it would probably speak to me too.

She also took me and her friend Claire to Jane's book signing in Bath. I was incredibly lucky to meet Jane before I'd actually read the book, and I even bought a signed copy for my mum.

I have to confess something that still makes me cringe a little. When I met Jane, I told her it was lovely to meet her, but admitted that I hadn't read any of her books. I instantly felt awful because I thought I saw her face drop, and I've regretted saying it ever since. Looking back, I wish I'd simply thanked her for sharing her story. So, Jane, if you ever read this, I'm sorry!

Listening to Rewilding was a completely different experience to what I expected. I thought it might give me a clear yes-or-no answer about where I am in my own life. Instead, it gave me something much more valuable: hope.

I'm at a stage where I feel settled and fulfilled in my career, but I've been questioning other parts of my life, particularly my relationship. Jane's honesty about her own struggles, growth and self-discovery made me realise that it's okay not to have everything figured out. Rather than convincing me to walk away, her story reminded me that some relationships are worth continuing to nurture, even when both people are struggling in different ways.

What resonated most was how normal she made it all feel. So many of the emotions she described are shared by women everywhere, yet we often feel we're the only ones experiencing them. Her openness about becoming comfortable in your own skin and finding your way again felt incredibly reassuring.

Having met Jane first, then listening to her narrate the audiobook, made the experience even more special. It felt as though she was sitting beside me in the car during my commute, sharing her story while I quietly reflected on my own life. It became more than just an audiobook; it became a companion during a time when I needed perspective.

So thank you, Jane. Thank you for your honesty, your vulnerability and the hope you gave me. It was a genuine privilege to meet you, and an even greater privilege to hear you tell your own story. You are an incredibly inspiring woman, and you come across exactly as you did in person, warm, genuine and someone whose kindness stays with you long after you've finished the final chapter. Also just wanted to give a big two fingers up to the Dutch couple on your behalf. 🙂

Heard a fantastic interview on The Shift with Sam Baker and immediately bought the audiobook. 'Janey' is definitely my kind of human, my "tribe". Loved the warm, honest, thoughtful account of her transformation which really resonated with me. I identified with so much of what she describes. Totally different lives, but went through my own painful but liberating rewilding a few years ago. Yes, definitely "not a midlife crisis but a beautiful awakening."
Also such a fun read!
Thank you Janey,
love you ♥️ Tonia

Very honest account of a dramatic life change. I agree that there is no such thing as a midlife crisis, moreover a midlife awakening. Resonated on many levels as I too am building a (part-time) life in Marrakech.

Enjoyable

Jane articulates wonderfully how women of a certain age feel. Well done Jane. May you go onwards and upwards.
