Inside the walls of Vita Nova, safety comes at a terrible price. The elderly and chronically ill face mandatory euthanasia, while the "Volunteer Program" offers citizens a week of luxury and adorationbefore their execution. Kira Liebert works with the Volunteers, granting their every wish. Despite losing her sick mother to the Compulsory Program, she believes in the system that keeps their overcrowded city alive. Until Will Foster walks into her office. Young, handsome, and volunteering to die for the good of the city, Will has just one request for his Final Week: He wants to spend it with Kira. Unable to refuse a Volunteer's last wish, she's swept into an unexpected journey that takes her beyond the barricadeinto the dangerous Unregulated Zone where lawless marauders roam among crumbling buildings and overgrown highways. What Kira discovers will shatter everything she believes about Vita Nova, forcing her to confront the darkness within the system she once trusted. Loved the characters and the post apocalyptic world is so great! Can’t wait to start book 2

Absolutely fantastic

The story itself was actually very good, but about three quarters through the god and Christianity references spoiled it a bit for me. And the authors note at the end confirmed it. I've listened to it but I won't listen to the others really because it was a bit preachy.

A bit too heavy on the religion towards the end

The story so far is good, it's a bit basic and the writing isn't on the same level as books like 'The Hunger Games', but it's interesting and keeps you hooked. The narrator really lets it down however, she mispronounces words and sometimes repeats a sentence twice, which breaks the immersion. She also sounds like AI, I can see why the next two books have a different narrator.

Awful narrator

I had never heard of this series or author but was in my “recommended” titles and i bought on a whim. Goodness!!! It was just gripping from the beginning and am now on to book three. This is not your average predictable thriller and moves at a good pace throughout. Very easy to listen to. The Christian theme is not overbearing and is not strongly trying to push conversion or anything. It’s more a case that some of the main characters have a strong faith and this plays out in the dimensions of their actions and thoughts. Therefore i would feel suitable for christians and non christians alike. Really have enjoyed this and looking forward to finishing the trilogy.

I really enjoyed this book, although the narrator seemed to get the pronunciation of some words incorrect, for example what should have been cannula was pronounced canola. The story was well thought out and I think reflects what might happen when a government knows it has limited resources and doesn't want to lose control of a population. The love story between the two main characters might feel a bit rushed, but actually given that they are both very young and Kira very inexperienced with any close relationships I can see how it happens. I'm looking forward to reading parts two and three

A great post apocoliptic story
