On a bright sunny day in Port Silver, ex-Journalist Martin Scarsden misses a call from his girlfriend, Mandy. Checking his voicemail later, all he hears is her terrified scream before the phone cuts off. Back at the house, he finds a policeman unconscious on the floor and Mandy gone. So starts a twisting tale of intrigue and danger, as Martin probes the past of the woman he loves, a woman who has buried her former life deep. And for the first time, Mandy finds denial impossible, now that the body of a man has been discovered - a man to whom she was engaged to marry.

Brilliant and totally gripping
This is the second Aussie crime writer I have been impressed with recently. It is a combination of too much light and too much coffee that seems to produce writers of wit and powerful descriptions. I was also very impressed with the narrator. This is a true five star listen.

Excellent book and great 1st book
Series would be great for this defective detective. Interest held throughout. Surprise ending and thoroughly suspenseful page by page. Absorbing with real life characters with all life's problems. I enjoyed every minute listening to the wonderful narration. You can't go wrong getting this book. 5 stars all the way. Mike Dunn

Exciting mystery
Exciting and intense at times, with interesting, complex characters. I figured out some of this complex mystery, but not all of it. There was plenty of “who do I trust, who don’t I” to keep me doubting almost everyone. The audiobook was solidly narrated. The reader has a good voice, though not all of his voices were distinguishable from each other, which at times caused me a little confusion over who was saying what. The audio didn’t do much to enhance the book, but it didn’t hurt it either. I wouldn’t mind listening to the next one, but I’d be happy reading it in print too.

Good Until the Last Scene
The story is good but the last action scene is drawn out and contrived, which is made more frustrating by the fact that the rest of the story hangs together pretty well. Also, an author who wants to write crime novels should learn more about guns and how to handle them.

Well-plotted mystery!
Well plotted, interesting characters, good length. I really enjoyed the authors creative descriptions. Some were so good that I stopped to write them down to re-read later. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. The one problem I had: The narrator's accent took getting used to. At first I struggled to understand him.

Irksome convo
I became increasingly bothered by the efforts of the deaf protagonist to understand and be understood by others. The repetition made for choppy flow, slowed the story, and caused me to be annoyed with, not sympathetic to, the main character. The author had an interesting idea, but I think it is difficult to execute well. Don’t recommend.
