About this listen

From the moment she’s struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear Mary Anning is marked for greatness. When she uncovers unknown dinosaur fossils in the cliffs near her home, she sets the scientific world alight, challenging ideas about the world’s creation and stimulating debate over our origins. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is soon reduced to a serving role, facing prejudice from the academic community, vicious gossip from neighbours, and the heartbreak of forbidden love.

Luckily Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly, intelligent Elizabeth Philpot, a middle-class spinster who is also fossil-obsessed. Despite their differences in age and background, Mary and Elizabeth discover that, in struggling for recognition, friendship is their strongest weapon.

I've just finished 'Remarkable Creatures' and was truly sorry it was over. I found the subject of fossil hunting fascinating and the characters very engaging. The excellent narration from Hattie Morahan brought the characters to life, and I wanted to continue with them further to find out how they fared. The book has so fascinated me that I rather fancy a trip to Lyme Regis fossil-hunting! I thoroughly recommend this book - it is one of my favourites from Audible so far.

This charming book tells a fascinating story with a great sense of period. It is beautifully written and Hattie Morahan’s performance is wonderfully judged.

Delightful!

Loved this fictional account of Mary Anning and Elizabeth Philpott. Hattie Morahan is fabulous as usual and makes this story even more enjoyable as it flips between Mary and Elizabeth's voices. so refreshing to have a female perspective albeit fictional, as this is what is missing from Historical accounts. Tracy Chevalier's description of small details in the life of her characters bring them into the present so one feels as if standing at a doorway watching them. Heartily recommend this book

Fossils

If you enjoy books driven by character rather than plot and have an interest in natural history, you will love this. The story centres on two women, both trying to find their place in a society unable to cope with their un-ladylike passion for fossil hunting. The plot is enjoyable though simple - the joy is in the portrayal and development of the characters. Hattie Morahan's narration is a delight - her characterisations excellent and her voice is a real pleasure to listen to.
