Story
When a sick friend asks Edward Lincoln to investigate the comprehensive failure of a string of racehorses, he agrees to help out. But it is impossible for him to go about the task quietly and unnoticed because he is now a world-class star of action films, in which he always plays the hero. And the apparently easy survey of the string of racehorses blows him through a smokescreen into circumstances, where, to survive, he has to make himself become the man everyone else already thinks he is.

Story
The house was stripped bare of all its treasures. Gone was the furniture, the family silver, the paintings and the antique china. And if that was a shock for Charles Todd, painter of horses, how much more harrowing was the trauma for his cousin Donald, whose house it was and whose young wife lay on the sitting room floor, bloody and dead... A coincidental meeting with a middle-aged widow sends Charles off to Australia, on the trail of a gang with a fruitful business in forging works of art.

It’s the classic law of the invader. Get to the strongest guy and smash him, then watch the weaker ones fall like ninepins. Which is just what a vicious gang of horse dealers decides to do when their little kickback scam is threatened with a spot of old-fashioned honesty. But they haven’t reckoned with bloodstock agent Jonah Dereham, a man who belies his quiet exterior with a steely and implacable resolve. They can threaten him, try to burn down his home, even attempt to kill him. But they’ll soon wish they hadn’t.

Blaggards and blackmail
Fast paced action centered on a not quite first class national hunt jockey, who in the course of narrative finds himself confronting his past and dealing with the politics of jump racing; brushes with betting syndicates, a power grabbing bully, a religious cult and a narcotics pusher leave our hero battered and bruised, but hardened by his experience. Wonderfully paced and detailed, a thoroughly enjoyable listen (and read).

Reflex
tony Britton always enhances a story. I can listen to Dick Francis books over and over again, he knew the racing world so well, and makes one feel that any other subject is well researched. Yes, they are formulaic/ but many authers who write a series of books especially of this genre are formulaic, doesn't make them less readable.

Great story, read well.
As with other readings by this actor, at first I thought his voice was too mature to play this character. However, he's so good that I was well past that by 10 minutes in. The story is one of the best Dick Francis ones and the kids and I were entertained during long car journeys.

I hate horse racing but with Dick Francis....
As a young man, living in the country, I grew up near stables and in the country that Dick Francis novels are set. Horse racing, with graft, corruption, and criminality have never appealed to me but during a period of sickness, while convalescing, Reflex was presented in 15 minute segments as a book reading on a local radio station. Much as I loathed the so-called sport, I was hooked by this book and I think I've read just about every Dick Francis novel. This one appealed to me because of the little mysteries and the crooks involved at every level. The novels also provide insight into the problematic life of a professional jockey (although Dick Francis's characters are usually amateurs) and the temptations of the fast life, the glitz and the glamour, juxtaposed by being ordered to cheat and the problems of having a conscience. Reflex will always stand out in my mind as one of the first books that drew me to the audible form and through it an understanding of some of the problems faced by those engaged in the industry. Dick Francis was not the most successful English jockey but his literary jockeys are believable human beings with strengths, weaknesses and every other human problem and for that reason, the books have been remarkably successful.

Jolly Good Listen
Initially I found the narrator's voice jarring as it seemd too old for the main character's age but as I got involved in the story either he adjusted it or my mind compensated for this and the theater of the mind took over. All the other characters were well interpreted.Well read and interpreted by the narrator and a good, entertaining listen if you like this genre. The author knows his subjects well and the pace and mystery never lets up until the end.
