About this listen

Carter

I’ve spent my whole life proving people wrong. From foster homes to the football field, I clawed my way out, one yard at a time. And now? I’m on the verge of everything I’ve worked for. The draft. The NFL. The future I’ve always dreamed about.

Except all I can think about… is her. Lyla Harding–my coach’s daughter.

Lyla

Carter Hayes is a walking headline waiting to happen. And I’m the one who’s supposed to keep his image clean.

He’s infuriating. Arrogant. Impossible to ignore. And the more I tell myself he’s just another assignment… the harder it gets to pretend he isn’t everything I’ve ever wanted.

Choosing him could cost me everything I’ve worked for. But staying away might break me anyway.

First of all I'd like to thank Riley for the Advice Listener Copy of this book, It landed in my inbox just before Christmas so apologies it has taken me so long to listen and do a review.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this audiobook. I'm a big sports romance girl and I am a sucker for a college romance. I think it's the nostalgia it brings back for me. Carter and Lyla's story is slightly different to any other coach's daughter trope that I've listened to before... The mental health reps in this book were so well covered by both the writer Riley and the narrators... The anxiety and OCD storyline carries throughout the book, but it's handled with so much care.
The two characters have instant connection and I believe it's based on their family backgrounds. Carter grew up in foster care never really feeling loved. And Lyla lost her Mam to cancer Which is what we are believed to have triggered her anxiety and OCD condition. We learn she feels she must compete for her Dads love. As the story progresses, both characters start to fall for each other but can't identify "That feeling in their chest" as Love. There are some great spicy scenes...but in a real romantic and swoony way. He also becomes so protective and cares for her which is what we love to see from our MMCs.

The Narration:
As a huge Austin Stone fan, I was thrilled to see he'd be narrating this with CJ Bloom. Being the huge romance junkie that I am, I have obviously come across both narrators before but I'd never heard them work together. Let me tell you, this was a pairing I did not know I needed in my life - They compliment each other so well.

I loved this Book - The Tropes were so good Coach's Daughter, He Dalls First, Mental Health Reps
