When Moslem fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralise NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuvers to cloak a crash military build-up. When Soviet tanks begin to roll, the West is caught off guard. What looks like a thrust turns into an all-out shooting war, possibly the climactic battle for control of the globe.

Rereading after nearly 30 years, still an epic book. Narration really adds to the experience

there are no chapters in this book and the timer starts at zero. so I was "-14h" into the book, when it lost my place and started again from the beginning. I do not want to re-listed to half a day's worth of audiobook just to get back to my place. please fix this

Great Cold War Novel

Although written in 1986, this book is very far from outdated and would no doubt find itself on reading lists at Sandhurst or Westpoint. Red Storm Rising creates a highly believable scenario wherein a resource hungry USSR initiates a first strike against NATO in order to seize the oil fields of the Persian Gulf.
Most of the action takes place in Iceland, and this part of the story is perhaps the most readable, at least for this reader. Very much a military enthusiasts book, Red Storm Rising is highly technical, and at times overloads the reader with high tech conventional weaponry and their workings, however, if read correctly, can serve very much as an educator for the less well versed in the technical side of war.
Very much a techno thriller as it concerns a war directly underway with the focus mainly upon the logistical importance of the Keflavik NATO base and the control of access to the Atlantic. However, Clancy provides interesting workings in the Politburo in Moscow and the political machinations.
This may well be my favourite Clancy novel, despite being the only one set out of the Ryan verse. The narration by Michael Prichard is excellent and really sets the tone.
A tough book and not a light undertaking, but well worth it and indispensable for military enthusiasts.
