Critic reviews

‘An excellent writer.’ George R.R. Martin

'If you like fresh, take-no-prisoners fantasy, this is for you'
No.1 New York Times bestselling author Rick Riordan

‘Dark, passionate, tense, with a female hero anyone could relate to–I was utterly fascinated! This is no pretty, flowery tale, but one of vastly different people struggling to survive when a hostile government comes to power’ – No.1 New York Times bestselling author Tamora Pierce

‘This is a book very distinct from everything that came before; what it has in common though is a narrative that pulls no punches, and characters that are beautifully, brokenly, repellently, cleverly human’ Sci-Fi and Fantasy Reviews

‘I had never thought it was possible to find a greater character than the Emperor Jorg Ancrath. I had never even slightly considered that there might be a fantasy world out there toppling that of Τhe Final Empire, and most definitely, I had never thought that i could love a book more than The Night Angel. But here we are’ BookNest

‘Any other author is going to have to smack the ball way, way out of the park to top this read’ Parmenion Books

If you liked Prince of Thorns and The Red Queens Game, but were disappointed by a lack of strong female leads, this is the book for you. As a woman, I mostly buy male dominated books finding those written by and for women often lack grit. Not so with this one, Nona rages and slashes her way through the pages every bit as full of dark vitriol as Jorg Ancrath. If you haven't read those, you're in for a treat and I'm delighted to say that the narration is top notch for all books. Purchase without reservation.

Any additional comments?

If you had told me that I would be blown away by a book about a bunch of little girls attending a convent then I would have called your sobriety into question. However from the second I started the book to the very end, I was hooked.

It's a little bit like the book Blood Song by Anthony Ryan except it is infinitely better. The basic premise is about a young girl who, after some unpleasantness with a child taker and a gallows, finds herself training to be a nun. Thankfully for me at least, the nuns are the fighting kind not just the praying kind. There are some prophesies, some interesting magical systems and a strange world to explore, all linked with an almost poetic writing style.

I particularly liked the sci-fi element of the worlds origins. Apparently, although the world is the usual medieval type affair, the people on the planet were carried there in space ships hundreds of generations before to escape a dying sun.

If I were to try to find a problem with it, it would be that it takes a while for the reader to understand all the magic and the nature of the world. However as the main character is a child and doesn't understand these things herself I guess it makes sense.

I'm fairly certain that, once the next book comes out, this series will sit in my top 5 fantasy series alongside,The Kingkiller Chronicals, the Codex Alerea, The Stormlight Archive and the Riftwar Cycle.

Nun better

I don't write many reviews, but I had to with this serious! it was that good!
I also must say the narrator in these books helped bring everything together! she had a feline voice, in the best way, uou will completely understand if you lisyen to it, even the clip!!! PIPER!

This book was, captivating, and gripping!

It's not often I leave a comment about a book I've listened too but I had to make an exception for 'Red Sister'.

To say that Red Sister was interesting would not do it justice, it was thrilling to listen to and frankly ended too soon. I loved the dynamic of the relationship between characters. I also loved the protagonist of this tale, she was both gritty and what I can only described as, well, 'human' in her imperfections.

Honestly I can not wait for the next instalment.

If there were one criticism I had to make, it would be that at times the audio was not loud enough.

Thrilling
