Summary
From the New York Times best-selling author of the Gray Man series comes a startlingly realistic novel of World War III.
A desperate Kremlin takes advantage of a military crisis in Asia to simultaneously strike into Western Europe and invade east Africa in a bid to occupy three rare Earth mineral mines that will give Russia unprecedented control over the world's hi-tech sector for generations to come.
Pitted against the Russians are a Marine lieutenant colonel pulled out of a cushy Pentagon job, a French Special Forces captain and his intelligence operative father, a young Polish partisan fighter, an A-10 Warthog pilot, and the commander of an American tank platoon who, along with his German counterpart, fight from behind enemy lines.
Through grand land, sea, and air battles to a small unit fighting hand-to-hand in the jungle, Russia and the US face off in a terrifying but thrilling battle for world dominance - with constant the threat of a Russian nuclear detonation ever present.

implausible
i really liked mark greaney before this book, and was really looking forward to this book. but it is so unreasonable in it's understanding of europe and Africa, and just how they work. it doesn't even seem to have done any research on NATO QRF forces, who they are, what they are, and what they do. what about Britain, was she just sitting there doing nothing!!!

Bit unrealistic
I found the fact that Russian Special forces teams are completely incompetent, unrealistic. Spoiled the story for me. Any time there’s combat you can bet the Russians will be running into trees or standing in the open during a fire fight. while NATO troops are top of the range

Not his greatest work
Ended up here after loving the grey man series and it’s pace. I found this book much slower and hard to get into. Managed to finish it eventually, but compare that to his other work where I couldn’t wait to pick it back up.
Characters weren’t particularly interesting. Just didn’t come together for me, found my mind drifting the entire time.

Far fetched plot
I have enjoyed the Grey Man series. This however did not have the focus and the story line was not believable. Also cannot understand why all the main characters have to be using the name of Christ as a swear word continually. As a Christian I find that offensive

Modern Day Combat at its best!
The depth of knowledge that has gone in to writing this book is apparent in every chapter!
Great characters, with such depth and links it will have you hooked from the start!
I bought this as a modern day Red Storm Rising! It’s so much more!
One downside was the lack of British support! A glaring omission from the book! British Force have a presence in every theatre included in this book!

The narrator is very good
I understand that this type of book will be like this. All shooting, blowing up, killing whatever.
I think the author does a good job, but it is really a lot of hours of the same thing. I need more story, I guess. I let this book run through the whole thing, but all the battles are the same, so 3 hours later, that is still going on. 21 hrs .....and the narrator is still on a roll

This is the best military audiobook I have listened to in a long time. It is rare for a military audiobook to get down into detail and strategy, and also have an excellent plot. Russkies Go Home
If you like fictional "What If" war stories such as Tom Clancy's RED STORM RISING or SWORDPOINT,.....................
A good story teller Mark Greaney combines with an expert Military advisor Lieutenant Colonel Hunter Ripley Raulings USMC to create a real page turner of a Military novel. Could it happen ?? Maybe....Maybe not.But if it did [or something like it] the tactics and state of the art weapons systems could be utilized as described.
In a nutshell that and a great story is it's appeal. In fact there is so much there I will listen to it again in a few weeks and enjoy it just as much. Listening to Red Metal for 21 hours and 21 minutes.it seemed to pass very quickly.
Probably more of a guy book but there are strong believable female warrior characters for women that might enjoy a good Tom Clancy novel. This would make for a Great Beach book.

Outstanding! Worth waiting for!
Mark Greaney is already at the top of authors of espionage thrillers. With this long and very complex military thriller he excels with a different genre. Setting up the various parts of RED METAL requires some time, but the listener should stick with the book to be rewarded by an outstanding novel. Marc Vietor's narration is superb.

aweful
Of all the books I have listened to this will be my first review. it was just so bad. i was so excited too after listening to all the gray man series. it's not like I didn't really give it a try. I made it through the first 8 hours. painfully. the story is so painstakingly detailed it is more like reading an encyclopedia. and the performance is probably worse than the story. his cadence is so irritating. he talks clearly then always goes into this rough sounding voice and ends with a weird uptick as if asking a question. nonstop. every sentence. I have never quit a book, even though a few I wanted to....this one was just too much for me to handle.
